I think that is the point. I like Steve a lot and it wouldn't hurt my feelings personally for him to be here indefinitely since he runs a clean program. But I do think things have become stagnant, and change gives people something to talk about. And I don't think it is good for Steve, either. If he is a good coach, he needs to do something with it. He didn't make a move after we went to the NCAA or after the Fowler years. At some point, for his own sake, he is going to have to do something.

Some folks just like where they are and stability in their lives. Some are always looking for something "better". Like anyone, I assume Steve would leave if he got a very significant raise. Otherwise, I think he is very happy in Little Rock. I think Chris feels the same, at this point in his life, despite his applying for the UNLV job. While I don't agree with everything they do, I think we are lucky to have both.

Oh, I like Steve a lot. (Not quite so high on Chris.) But his is not a charismatic personality, and he needs to do something to inject some excitement into the program.

Shields is making good money/benefits from an Arkansas perspective and it seems like there is no pressure for him to win. I could see why he would want to stay at UALR. If he moves on to a higher level program that expects to win, heads would roll in athletic department if the AD keeps retaining a coach that is basically treading over a 50% overall winning percentage that includes several losing seasons. One thing for sure is up on the hill if Coach Anderson does not get it going by next season he will rightly be replaced.

Evidently some fans are the very same way. Some of us don't care for mediocre "stability", while others are happy with it. They'd rather been buddies with the coach. He might not want to drink beer with them though, or it might be fatal.

Never drank a beer or did anything social with Steve. I did with Mike Newell. Still able to look objectively at his overall coaching career.

Some can't accept what you say about your support of Steve and your reasoning and would rather imply that you are a liar if you insist that you are not a personal running buddy of his. 01-wingedeagle

RE: I'd like someone to tell me why I should worry
That Top 25 ranking Newell got was hilarious. I can swear to you this is true. My wife and I were having some beers with Mike after a game in Shreveport. Mike said he was going to call some of his coaching buddies (ex. Billy Tubbs) and get them to put us in the top 20. Low and behold we show up at number 19 the next week. Of course, we lost our next game at home to Mercer...yes Mercer, and that was the end of our ranking.

I figured Mickey would find a way to discredit anything Newell did. Anything positive anyway. He'll give you the negative real quick. You know, he only won tournaments in Little Rock, he had his buddies spike the punch in the Top 25 coaches poll. Makes you wonder whether or not he paid off the refs when they beat Notre Dame.

If Newell wasn't joking, I'd think UALR would have had to have been close to the top 25 or you couldn't hardly go to #19 from very far out. Surely he didn't have that many coaching buddies to swing the votes that much.

I don't know who Mickey dislikes the most, Newell or Mike Anderson. Surely he hasn't drunk beer with Anderson, but it surely didn't do Newell any good. Coach Shields needs to be sure and stay out of the beer joints with Mickey.

I still agree with the ASU supporter who said "if a coach stays more than 4 years at a mid-major, he most likely is not a winner. If he was bigger programs would be after him". I believe that applies to the UALR situation. IMO the UALR coaching job should not be the place for a "squatter".

You don't honestly believe that UALR was the 19th best team in the country? It wasn't the team that won an NCAA game either. The old coach's poll (UPI) was a joke since none of the coaches actually voted, but had the SID do it. Like you, I didn't really believe it when Mike told me he would get us in the poll. But there we were a week later in the poll on Monday morning. Lasted until we lost to Mercer on Thursday. And yes, I was excited about it as anyone when I saw us there.

I went back and looked. We had some nice OOC wins that year- Houston, Colorado, and USC (the fake one in California). We also had losses to powerhouses like UTSA, Hardin-Simmons, and Centenary before being ranked- and then the Mercer loss. We had been blown out by Indiana, OU, and Illinois. We were a "good" team. Probably better than any UALR team in the past 15 years. Still, it was a joke when we were in the Top 20. But, it was no "accident" we were ranked- Mike could sell water to a drowning man. And I loved it while he was here.

Maybe he could sell Chris a load or two, I think we've already gone down one time, if not two, and you know what happens on the third.

I'd all for it. Mike was the best salesman we ever had. That is what makes it so amazing that even he couldn't sell enough tickets to keep the program from drowning in red ink and having the chancellor threaten to close us down. Like Yncopirt always says "AD at UALR is the toughest job in the country".
