Shy What do all of these FB recruiting rankings mean?
http://247sports.com/Season/2014-Footbal...amRankings

Assuming that one thinks these ranking are both valid and reliable, look at #100 and below:

Bowl teams, MAC champ, etc. etc.

BSU 100, NIU 102 (they were in the hunt for a BCS bowl until the bitter end), Ohio 103, and MAC Champ, BG, 108. MAC champ at #108. 04-jawdrop

CMU, the school which produced the NFL's #1 pick, Eric Fisher, is sitting at #111. That didn't seem to help much.

And to add, irony, the MAC has one highly ranked team, #68, WMU, whose boat was taking on water all season (play on 'row your boat').

I think Toledo will also do well, other than WMU and Toledo MAC recruiting so far this year has been underwhemling.

Recruiting rankings for MAC teams is a total crapshoot. I wouldn’t place much faith in them at all.

Maybe tomorrow I'm going to do a 'little empirical study' by taking the 1st team all-MAC offense and defense and go back to probably Scout.com and produce a listing showing players and their number of 'stars'.

I don't expect to find much. Why?

Among the 'big time' programs most players are three or four stars with a smaller number of five stars. There is a very signficant amount of variability between an Alabama and say Vandy or Miss. State. Or Ohio State and say Illinois.

Among the MAC, most recruits are 2 stars and the rest 3 stars (except WMU this year).

As we might remember from previous discussions, the difference between one school's recruits and another might be that one has say 5 3-star recruits and the other 3 3-star recruits. That's it in a nutshell.

RE: What do all of these FB recruiting rankings mean?
I think the fact that Toledo normally has good recruiting rankings basically just keeps them from being a bottom-feeder, other than the that there isn't enough difference between the recruits at the MAC level. NIU with relatively low ranked recruits has done fine. And NIU has had multiple coaching staffs. So there doesn't seem to be much correlation between MAC "recruiting" rankings and actual success.

I'm of the school that one needs to do a 'case study' for each of the top recruits and see which ones really seem like prime MAC prospects (and ignore the 3-star stuff which is often given early, a kid has a sub-par senior year or has other issues, e.g., academics and then the big boys ignore him).

Here is a prime WMU recruit whom they have held on to despite a lot of big boys calling. and he will be just 17 in August.

I wonder if some day when we look at the next excellent MAC OT if this guy might be one?

RE: What do all of these FB recruiting rankings mean?
BTW, I'm awaiting the big discussions Wednesday.

My early take: WMU has had the best recruiting class in modern MAC history (I have not found anyone who disagrees),
CMU is having a pretty down year,
and CC has been living on expresso saving this year's class for being a disaster for a program which had 4 or 5 strikes against it.

As '79 has suggested, I bet the two hardest working recruiters for 2015 will be P.J. and CC.
CC will be a step slow in getting off the mark for 2015 (most schools are holding junior days) while CC is working hard to complete this class.

I believe coaches have a 12-month calender: Jan (current year recruiting), Feb (junior days), March - April (spring ball), May-June (evaluation/camps), July ?, August Sept - Nov: 03-cloud9 Dec: Bowl game (for some schools, 03-banghead) and recruiting.

Theses services mean zero, unless you are in the top 20 kids at certain positions and all the college services agree..

In the MAC it all about developing the talent that you have...
