How in the Heck did Cincy Lose to X and New Mexico?
Cincy wreaks havoc on the AAC but loses to Xavier and New Mexico. I do not understand.

December basketball is a whole lot different than basketball in conference season Teams grow and get better, UC had a lot player in new roles this season. Last year UC was a December champion but a pretty average team the rest of the way.

This offense this team is running now is miles from where it was six weeks ago, plus we rely on a sophomore and two freshman heavily and all three have really stepped their game up in the past month.

New Mexico is a pretty dang good team. Xavier isn't horrible.

Actually both are really good teams. They also have bulk and size in the middle which is still a weak spot for UC.

Easy answer...we can't beat teams with premier post play. Luckily no one in the AAC has that.

Much of that is because the opponents are not familiar with each other in a lot of non-conf match-ups...whereas come conf play...many of those teams play their conf opponents 1-2 times per year...which helps coaches plan attacks against a well-known opponent.

Upsets will ALWAYS happen in sports....thats one of the main reasons why most people watch...as you never REALLY know what the outcome will be.

A lot of basketball is about matchups. South Florida with it's big lumbering lineup is no match for Memphis' quickness but just beat a pretty good SMU team --- and I wouldn't be surprised if SMU beats Memphis (like they have everyone else this season) on their home court --

New Mexico's 7'0 center and 6'10 PF are beasts. Tough matchup for the Bearcats who lack a true post up guy.

Xavier shot that lights out of the ball in December. 11-16 from the 3 Pt line. Their big guy (Stainbrook) also was a tough matchup for UC.

The Crosstown Shootout/Showdown with Xavier is the nastiest rivalry in the NCAA and is almost always an outlier for each team's season.

3 of UCs top 4 reserves off the bench are true freshmen. Our PG getting the bulk of the minutes this year is a true freshman who was still 17 years old at the start of the season.

Lot of guys in new roles.

Also worth mentioning UC's top 3 frosh if you will are not playing now. Lawrence top 15 National player currently out with turf toe
Morman the top guard is redshirting with broken foot or ankle, and Strickland 6'10 260 center sitting out with a clearinghouse issue. Xu and New Mex offer match up problems with current line up but XU hot 11 of 15 or 16 from three so it did not matter that night. New Mex was at the Pit and they are huge! Neither was a bad loss by any means.

I think it's a great question. In addition to the other responses, Albuquerque is always a tough place to play, and Xavier, normally not much of a 3-pt shooting team, hit pretty much everything that night.

(edit) oops, T already provided the same response as mine - LOL!

I don't think it's crazy to lose to two NCAA tournament teams

The Pit at UNM is probably the toughest place to play in college basketball. If you ever saw it in person, you would be impressed. It is crazy.

I know memphis fans would hate it, but boy does SMU need this win against the Tigers and so does the conference if we want 5 teams in the Tournament. We've beaten them before in the CUSA with worse teams.

This and playing at New Mexico is not easy. The Lobos have a loud and packed arena called The Pit.

Still think this game should be played in Feb., when each team has their identity down. One game out of conf. isn't gonna hurt anything. Play it on a Sat. and don't play again until the following Sat.
