RE: Just so you know about the American TV Deal
Ignorance has no limits. Atlanta sits in the foothills of the Appalachian range, 1000 feet above sea level. There is not a long stretch of road anywhere in the metro area that is flat.

We also have perhaps one snow or ice event a year, or less. Sometimes 5-10 years with nothing significant. Definitely not worth maintaining a large fleet of snow removal equipment.

We also have a well-posted law that prohibits tractor-trailers from traveling through downtown interstates without a downtown destination. Jackknifed tractor-trailers are what jammed the interstates early.

The weather forecasts also added to the confusion. Until just a few hours before the storm actually hit, all the METRO areas north of I-20 (which runs east-west, just south of downtown), were under a storm WATCH, not a WARNING. By the time the WARNING was issued, everybody was already at work or school.

Also, the initial forecasts, right up until the day before, said the storm would likely hit around 10 p.m. that day. It actually came in between about 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Also, metro Atlanta is comprised of 13 counties (and 5 million+ people), most of them with both county and municipal school systems. That's a LOT of organizations among which to coordinate decision making, even if someone ever tried to do so.

Based upon the info given before the storm, particularly the weather forecasts, NOT a SINGLE ONE of those school districts decided to cancel school. Nor did a single university in the area. They usually react to WARNINGS, not WATCHES.

Anyway, it was more or less a convergence of a number of events that caused such chaos. More often, when we have such events, the forecasts are more definitive, and everything is shut down ahead of time.

We still have huge traffic shutdowns (b/c we have huge traffic), due to the hilly terrain and lack of snow removal equipment, but rarely anything of this magnitude. Just an unfortunate timing of events.

Either did I.

Whats ironic about that coach's comments about those #snotnose" folks down South?

His "hardnose" Northern Football team is sooooo tough, they play their home games INDOORS.

There are two comments that people outside the south make that really display a lack of understanding reality.

One refers to your above comment. It doesn't make economic sense to equip a southern city that receives serious snow/ice only every 4-5 years.

The other is the comment that southerners can't drive on snow. I can't verify that one way or another because we very, very rarely get snow on our roads. We get ice. So, anyone that wants to practice their car-hockey skills can come on down a couple of days every 3-5 years.

Not to come off like I am saying that Atlanta wasn't embroiled in a crisis, but everyone gets ice, especially when roads aren't pretreated. Snow falls, snow melts, temps drop in the evening and it freezes.

I have lived in the north and the south, people up north generally can drive better in snow or ice. But more importantly, people up north tend to know when conditions are bad enough to call it quits and head home.

Not to sound cliche, but Atlanta was a perfect storm. Weather comes in earlier than expected, everyone stays at work, road conditions deteriorate, what little snow removal equipment is around can't work.... few cars have all weather tires, a few get stuck, and then traffic slows down, trucks jackknife, everyone is stuck.. and there you have it.

He'd better hope another weak, late season Category 1 hurricane doesn't limp it's way anywhere near New York again because it didn't turn out so well last time.

Though i find the outrage to be a little sickening, it was a tongue in cheek comment that you have every right to respond to but to ask for an apology is childish.

People die in car wrecks due to bad drivers all the time, you going to ask anyone who makes a tongue in cheek comment making light of bad drivers to apologize? Yes, it sucked for those people in Atlanta but him making a statement like that in no way caused or worsened the weather or the resulting tragedies. People need to grow up and realize that if you don't like what someone says, you don't act like a petulant child and demand an apology, you do like the ESPN fellas and retweet it with evidence showing otherwise or comment on how ill prepared New York was for what amounts to a bad thunderstorm.

Why am I making this point? Because apologizing doesn't do anything, besides satiate people who desire it for their own selfish reasons, whereas the latter options actually inform people on the sheer idiocy of the persons statement. One route combats ignorance with knowledge whereas the other route combats ignorance with meaningless concessions of fault.

The people who should apologize are the govt officials who dropped the ball. No reason for kids to be sleeping in schools. This was a colossal failure.

Let's not over analyze this. If anyone is petulant it's the ACC head FB coach whose trip was "inconvenienced" and yet was too self absorbed to turn on the TV locally and assess the situation before doing exactly what petulant teenagers do, complain on social media. He got caught. Sorry.

Y'all act like this guy killed somebody himself. All he said was the snow didn't seem like a big deal, at least compared the the blizzards they get up North. He never said anything about kids dying or buses being stuck. He probably didn't even know about what was going on in Georgia, because he's way up in the upper reaches of New York state. I'm sure he'd be open to reading a paper if someone handed him a story.

Plain and simple - it was a douchey comment. It's like if the Miami or FSU Head Coach said something about New Yorkers being weak because Sandy was "just a tropical storm/small hurricane."

lol What a joke. Upstate NYers have to hear constant jokes about snow and cold weather but when someone from up north takes a jab about their weather they go ballistic.

Southerners remind me of women. Women will constantly talk crap about men but as soon as a man says something bad about a woman they cry that the man is sexist. Keep pulling out that victim card.

Agreed. I live in Baton Rouge and the schools shut down for three days this week and the town was paralyzed for two all because we got about a quarter-inch of "snow" (which was really more like ice pellets).

I don't see any problem with northerners finding humor in situations like that. Take it like a man and laugh along. 04-cheers

Most people in snow/ice areas up north have cars that can drive on the stuff.

This wasn't a regular Atlanta winter situation. Normally we shut it down and drink hot cocoa for 3 days. This was little different
