or UT-ing, A&M-ing or UM-ing. And that is the reason I feel that the upgrades will make the stadium feel generic.

I don't see what the big deal about artificial turf is. Very few schools in the north have real grass these days. And fans that don't like to see a replay? Only idiots would have no desire to watch a great touchdown or turnover again, or to see from another angle if a turnover or short yardage call was made correctly.
They want a classic, old time experience at the stadium. They think the opposite of you, they think that only idiots need to see the play again or be entertained by a Jumbotron.
They don't have any logos, advertisements or other things at the stadium, on purpose. They like the old, unadorned look.
I happen to think that ND can do a video board without a lot of advertisements and loud music, so I am not opposed to it.
This is a huge deal at ND. While other message boards talk about conference realignment, TV contracts and conference payouts, ND boards are filled with opposition to Field Turf and Jumbotrons instead.

Maybe that's why ND is seen as backward looking and has fallen from grace? Just saying.

ND, like most other teams, will need to find a way to bridge between the older diehards who want no ads and no technology in the stadium, and current students and young alumni (i.e., the next generation of possible donors and season-ticket holders) who are going to want video boards, Wi-fi, and other amenities (and not just in the suites). Don't want to end up with a next generation that watches at home but doesn't like going to the stadium.

But they have acknowledged their fall from grace?
Good, step one to any problem is admitting it.

Notre Dame can act like they care about tradition but they kind of threw it all out the window with their goofy alternate uniforms.

ND can afford that line of thought.

Fall from grace? They've been to 3 BCS bowls in the last 7 years, including a national title game. True, they're not the unquestioned #1 program like they were in the 70s. But if Notre Dame has "fallen from grace" then I'd hate to see what you think of teams they've clearly outperformed recently like Nebraska, USC, Penn State, Miami, Texas A&M, or (since you're an SEC fan) 10 other SEC teams.

So there's a student center, 4 academic departments, and a "digital media center" that will be included in this $400 million figure.
Still, the increased premium seating will be a boon for their budget. That's the driving force behind renovations at UC, TCU, and several other schools as well.
How is that "misleading"? Those will be all housed in the stadium structure itself.
They also plan to link the stadium with the neighboring Joyce Center.
My guess is that two video boards and field turf will be announced later as part of the project (as rumored).
I'm just saying that they're not spending $400 million on athletic facilities.
UC built our student rec center into the end zone 8 years ago. Built into it are 2,000 seats, the scoreboard, a concessionaire, the locker rooms, and storage facilities for the field maintenance crew. But when we built it we didn't call it a $113 million expansion of the stadium. That would have been ludicrous because nearly all of the cost was for a student rec center.
People would have (rightly) called us out on it, and they should do the same for Notre Dame. This is primarily an expansion for the academic side of the university that just happens to have a few rooms that will be used for 7 Saturdays a year.

The Irish have gone 21-5 the past two seasons, including an undefeated regular season and a title game appearance in 2012.
ND is 37-15 in four seasons under Brian Kelly.
Since a 4-5 start to his ND career in 2010, ND has gone 33-10 since then.
That is a "fall from grace" under Kelly?
How do those records stack up with the rest of college football during the past two and four season snapshots?
Prior to that?
Well, that is old time history under prior coaching regimes and is not relevant to right now and the near future.
Here, I thought that only ND fans were guilty of looking at the more distant past too much????
I guess not.....

Our AD mentioned last week that a group from ND came by last year to take a look at our new stadium for ideas. USC and Pat Haden are expected next week. They are getting ready to redo the Coliseum

Interesting.
If they do a serious remodel of the Coliseum, I have to think the NFL would be interested. It would make a lot more sense to rent it out / split the costs rather than build their own brand new stadium.
