And you were saying "you did not know Buffalo had a school"...

A fine Medical School, a prestigious law school, great PT and Pharmacy schools, some of the top 50 Engineering Programs in the nation, 30K students, and an Endowment which is more than double that of Memphis.

Not to mention, SMU, Rice, and Tulane also compete with schools like Northwestern, Stanford, etc. for students. Those are the type of institutions that those three are, they are also all private and in major cities.

I'd say them being extremely prestigious institutions is number 1 for larger endowment, but location and being private also are driving factors as many private institutions have a higher % of alumni donate.

I'm always struck by how under the radar Buffalo is. I think the state of New York is really failing to utilize that school as much as it should.

USF is a relatively new school. They did not officially open their doors until 1960 and did not offer any graduate programs untils the 70s. Since the 80s they have been heavily involved in research. I will guess we will see that endowment continue to shoot up in the next decade or so.

UConn doesn't really need a huge endowment as the state/taxpayers picks up all their bills. I'd be really ticked if I were an alum/student at another public school in the state like Central Connecticut State.

Temple's endowment blows. Not much more to be said about it.

NY seems to do what many schools have done and that is thinking you don't need to publicize how good you are. the SUNY system is actually very good on the whole with a lot of quality institutions of every level and type but many people won't even know. For instance SUNY Binghamton is very highly regarded in various areas (a public Ivy by some), SUNY Geneseo is more highly regarded than its small public nature would indicate. Buffalo is in that group as well.

NY probably has not felt a need to really pimp out its schools since so many people utilize the system already but I think there is more of a push now since it is a good way to bring money into the state. Granted considering that my Ohio friends could go to many SUNY school's for cheaper than they could go to their Ohio schools I guess they are still a good value...

Also keep in mind there was no SUNY until the 1950's... And even then it was small(ish) schools. UB has grown and along with Stony Brook re starting to exert themselves as major U's (though UB is maybe adecade in front of SB if not further.
