Average fan would not even know they changed it if they walked into Ficklen and that was the midfield logo and they had not told anybody.

I think you are correct. I kinda wish they had just changed it without telling anyone (although I fully understand why that did not/could not happen). I bet you wouldn't get 1/10 of the negative reaction we are seeing.

New ECU logo for the AAC era
Quote:for television in-game and studio graphics the primary mark is preferred followed by “east carolina” and then “ecu” based upon space limitation and context. e. carolina, east caro and other abbreviation’s are not acceptable.

Here's looking at you BC$(EC)PiN!

I would hate to see the University of Memphis change our logo. The leaping tiger is very recognizable. That logo is the only form of branding that our school has that is easily known as being Memphis. The UofM , the M, or the floating blob tiger are easily confused with a number of other schools.
No offense to my UofM brothers, but I think the Memphis logo could use a makeover.

For a school that's only been a state u for less than 50 years, ECU has come a long way on and off the field.

Whut?

Try 107 years. No not a full University for that time, but has always been a public college. And, ECU has been a 4 year school since 1920, full college in 1951 (ECC), Unviersity status came in 1967.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Carolina_University

Our football program was started in 1932, women's basketball is the oldest athletics program starting as a club sport in 1912.

I agree, although the old and new PSOMs are pretty even IMO.

And it looks like the colors went from purple and yellow to blue and gold...maybe its my eyes or the computer screen...

Yeah I have to say a change I didn't realize until I saw the side by side was the shift from yellow to gold. I'm a big fan.

The purple shift seems wrong though.

So apparently that image posted in here is incorrect and has the wrong hue. It'll be the same purple as before

Logo design choices explained. A good listen for anyone looking for insights.

Very good listen.

As a recap...

1. Moving the bones up underneath the chin was done to square the image up, which is better than a more rectangular image

2. Historically speaking, all ECU logos have had four things; Eyepatch, Earring, bandana and hat. It was important to keep those things.

3. For brand recognition, it was important to get ECU back on the hat. It was historically on the hat prior to the last logo change.

4. Numerous discussions with apparel manufacturers and retailers indicated the teeth and bandana on the former jolly roger logo were too detailed to embroider. Therefore, they reduced the number of teeth and excluded some of the detail in the bandana for this purpose.

5. Lots of market surveys and studies were done prior to this logo change. It's not something that was just done overnight. The market surveys began in 2012 and included over 2,100 participants from a large geographic area. The participants were grouped by location into local, regional and national categories. While we scored adequately with local brand recognition, we failed regionally and nationally. Lots of thought went into this thing.

6. Big push now to be branded as East Carolina or ECU. No E. Car., etc. on digital images.

If they had put out 1/3 of what Binegar said in that interview prior to the launch they would have mitigated a whole hell of a lot of the pushback.
