RE: Lance tells Mark Berman he is retiring
I talked to some of our players last year after Lance had shown up to provide some coaching during fall ball. They were very complimentary about his coaching.

More @RiceOwlsBSB coach Wayne Graham on Lance Berkman: "It sounds like he wants to coach. Hopefully at one time or another it will be here."

However, I've heard through the grapevine that he's given up on getting his degree, which pretty much rules him out. He'll likely go into broadcasting, IMO....though I'd love to have him back at Rice.

Walt - any insight on why he's given up on the degree ? I thought he wanted to go into coaching (where you need the degree). Of course he doesn't need the $$$.

I don't see us ever getting over the hump hitting as a team, without someone like Lance providing the spark.

I think we'll be over the "hitting hump" this year. Outside of Indiana, LSU, ULaLa and UVA, we may have the best returning offense (at least on paper) amongst the Top 15 - 17 teams.

Thx Walt; that's got me excited then.

RE: Lance tells Mark Berman he is retiring
Congratulations to Lance on a great career. As a Cardinals fan, I will never forget two things:

1) All the dingers he hit against us in the Crawford Boxes, and
2) His great play for us in 2011, especially the clutch two-out, two-strike single he hit to drive in the tying run in Game 6 of the Series. While David Freese's heroics overshadowed Lance's role in that game, he was equally important IMO.

May he have success in whatever future role he decides to take.

Or we could start honor numbers for the players. 37 probably should be retired because no future will match Wayne.

I know that there are a number of issues involved but I just think it's time and Lance would be the perfect first honoree.

I will slightly disagree. When the proper time inevitably comes, the number 37 should be the first to be retired. Then Berkman's 27 and perhaps a few others can follow in short order.

Agree with both: honor jerseys and the retirement of #37 millisecond Wayne Graham hangs it up.

That bat flip HR to left (off of C. Carpenter) in the 2005 NLCS - in what would later be known as the Pujols/Lidge game - was just brutal.

All was forgiven after 2011, however.

...of what should be known as the Roy Oswalt series (even though the average media hack conveniently forgets which team actually won the series).

Cards fans don't - Roy beat us in the last game ever played in Busch II.

Richard Justice tweet from yesterday:

"If you're really lucky in life, you might someday meet someone as funny and smart and decent as Lance Berkman"

Is the ball Pujols hit off Lidge still being tracked by NASA?

It never left the building - the roof was closed.

Yep. I saw it go over the railroad tracks.
