Consider this expansion hypothesis (AAC/G'town/V'nova)
I recently read an opinion piece on a blog (it's dated, but not necessarily untrue) Link

And I was wondering about the potential and worth of the two title listed programs.

Is there a scenario where the Big East recedes further into the shadows of obscurity, that it drives programs like Villanova and Georgetown to advance their athletic program, and join perennial basketball powers like Memphis, Cincinnati, UConn, and Temple (not to mention the possibility of a VCU Oly add to counter Navy), while fuel-injecting their D1 football programs with an above average media deal (in terms of exposure), in the AAC?

Playing local teams (in football) like Navy, Temple, UConn, ECU and each other must seem promising, right?
    AAC - North
  • UConn
  • Temple
  • Villanova
  • Georgetown
  • Navy
  • Cincinnati
  • ECU
    AAC - South
  • UCF
  • USF
  • Memphis
  • Tulane
  • SMU
  • Tulsa
  • Houston
Cross Division rivals (for a potential zipper)
  • UCF-USF
  • Tulsa-Tulane
  • SMU-Houston
  • V'nova-G'town
  • Temple-V'nova
  • SMU-Navy
  • Cinci-Memphis

and so on..

I'm not talking about ALL the catholic schools.

I'm talking about an all-sports invite to V'Nova and G'Town only.

I don't believe Georgetown football even gives out scholarships. The GTown president was the architect of the new catholic league, they are not going anywhere.

G'Town is in a D1 league for football (Patriot League). They have to give out scholarships.

Though you do have a point in that last sentence.

AAC contract: $2 million/school
BE contract: $5 million/school

AAC recruiting: ???
BE recruiting: The most fertile basketball areas in America.

AAC culture: ???
BE culture: Almost all are Catholic and many have been playing each other on a regular basis for 30+ years

Bottom line:
UCONN t the BE + MAC is more likely than GU and VU to the AAC. I don't think that either will happen, though.

I think the Patriot allows scholarships but doesn't mandate them--the perfect situation for Georgetown's budget football program (since that Ivy bid is never coming.)

I'm an alum from Lehigh of the Patriot League. The Patriot League just started allowing football scholarships this past season. They can only give a max of 15 scholarships for incoming players (so 60 total max). Prior to this year, Lehigh would offer "need based scholarships" to its football players to get around the rule. I believe the other conference members did a similar thing.

I don't see the Catholic League breaking up unless an offer came from the likes of the ACC not the AAC. Add the likes of Georgetown, Villanova, St. Johns and one other and you have yourself a basketball league that no one will ever be able to be compared to with a straight face.

Notre Dame set the precedent.

RE: Consider this expansion hypothesis (AAC/G'town/V'nova)
The Big East makes more TV money for basketball alone than the AAC does for both football and basketball. At the same time, Georgetown led the charge to GTFO of the old Big East because they are sick, sick, SICK of football realignment. The only school that the Catholic schools care about is UConn, who is doing everything possible to leave the AAC ASAP just like Syracuse, Pitt and everyone else. So, the new Big East is infinitely more stable than the AAC, makes more TV money than the AAC, and Georgetown in particular has enormous power within the league. You'll see Miami and Virginia Tech go back to the American before Georgetown and Villanova ever would. They want nothing to do with that league, which is why they broke off in the first place.

No way, no day. First, AAC should want nothing to do with BB - they are trying to build the G5 D league - launching pad to P5 - it's only about FB. Second, BE schools are pretty set in BE money/access wise in BB. Only place any BE team would move is ACC if it ever went hybrid which is as likely as BE schools moving to AAC (although an ACC adding GT, VU and SJU would be the greatest BB conference). I do agree if ever feasible BE would associate with UConn for BB/Olympic sports but UConn's focus is finding a P5 lifeboat so BE would be a loss for them.

I think it's much more likely that Cincy and UConn join the Big East than Villanova and Georgetown join the AAC.

Let's say, for example, that the Big 12 decides to add USF and UCF (not an unrealistic scenario IMO). I think it would be a very wise move for Cincy and UConn to join the MAC for fb-only and the Big East for all other sports. On the flip side, I can't think of any scenario where Georgetown and Villanova would benefit from joining the AAC.

Why would Nova and G'Town forfeit $2.5M a year do join the AAC?

Split into two separate conferences and you have the start of something.

Actually the Patriot League specifically prohibits football scholarships.

This year was the first year the Patriot League allowed them (15 max per incoming class for 60 max total). Prior to this year, most conference schools gave "need based scholarships" to get around the rule.
