UC coaches to recognize Peters today
UC coaches to recognize Peters today
01/26/14 at 11:26am by Bill Koch

The UC coaching staff will wear lapel pins that read, “4 Pete’s Sake” during Sunday’s game at Temple to recognize Dan Peters, a former UC assistant coach under Bob Huggins who is fighting pancreatic cancer. Peters is currently the director of basketball operations at Akron.

Dan Peters

Peters worked at UC for six seasons from 1999 through 2004. He was promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach at UC in 2002.

The Akron program has dedicated this season to Peters – also known as Pete. The players have worn a patch on their uniforms with a purple ribbon and words, “4 Pete’s Sake.”

WVU wore a button on their uniforms yesterday (against OK State) as a tribute to Peters...

They talked about it and showed the pin on today's game. Keep Dan and his family in your prayers.

I wish him a miracle. Pancreatic cancer wins 90% of the time. That said unless I am mistaken Peters screwed UC and went to a Ohio University in Columbus with Thad (what's dah) Matta. Then Thad screwed him.

I don't think Dan screwed UC. He saw what was happening and going to happen with Hugs and had a good opportunity offered to him byThad. I hated seeing him go to OSU but he had to watch out for him and his family. Dan's a good guy.

And from what I heard he has a 5% chance of survival.

5 beats 0. I've seen it in real time with a friend. Prayers don't hurt either.

I hate to be grim but that number is probably high. The surgery he had that they opened him up but couldn't operate is called the whippel procedure and is considered the only viable option for long term survival. Now just because he couldn't have it now doesn't mean he couldn't have it in the future. When my dad was diagnosed he was not considered operable but chemo shrunk his tumor enough to where they could operate. Even the surgery doesnt have a high level of success, often the cancer reforms in the area where the tumor was cut out.

Simply put someone diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer needs a miracle for long term survival.

And with regards to Peters screwing UC, Huggs was clearly on thin ice when he left, there was no choice to be made.

that is correct. Huggins had gotten in trouble and with the EVIL WITCH in control, none of the coaches felt secure.
Prays that coach Dan Peters gets healed up and continues on. God bless.

RE: UC coaches to recognize Peters today
I'm very sad to see this reported today; Dan was a really good man.

College basketball world mourns Dan Peters' passing

Dan Peters, a former UC Bearcats assistant and UC's interim coach after the 2004 suspension of Bob Huggins (following Huggins' arrest for drunken driving), has passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 60.

Peters was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December.

RE: UC coaches to recognize Peters today
I was just at a Pancreatic cancer awareness event last night. Unfortunately this is the outcome for most.

The outcomes for pancreatic cancer are just awful, it's the only form of cancer with a single digit 5 year life expectancy and 80% die within the first year. It's expected to be the #2 cancer killer by 2020. The incident rate isn't going up dramatically but all the other cancers are making much better progress.

That is how I remember it, he joined Whatsa Matta at an Ohio University at Columbus (OHUC)

I hope something can be done soon. I know 3 guys who have been diagnosed with it over the last 3 years. 1 died after a year. 1 is not well after 18 months.

Billy, sorry about your recent personal losses. I know, all too well, how you feel.
