Hope he works out. Another DIII guy from Ohio. Had a few good years as head coach at Youngstown State before he was fired/resigned.

RE: Toledo's New Defensive Coordinator
Jon Heacock was a GA for The Rockets back in 1983. Helped coach the DL.

Why are we bring in a coach, who's resume does not look that good? From what I seen of Purdue last year, there defense couldn't stop Booze the clown, can't we get a coach that isn't from Ohio or has coached in the MAC before? Kent State has never been a football powerhouse.

I trust Campbell's decision and reasoning. KSU had some very good D's under Hazell and Heacock. I can find no real fault with this hire. If Campbell hires an unknown and it doesn't work he has to be questioned but he is bringing in a documented good DC. Coach campbell knows the road to championships for UT is on the D side of the ball.

RE: Toledo's New Defensive Coordinator
I like the idea of hiring a guy who has been around the block a few times and has some experience; however, I am a bit concerned that 30 years after being a GA at UT, he is now only worked his way back up to being a coordinator at UT (of course he was a head coach for 9 of the intervening 30 years). In the final analysis, only time will prove if this is a good hire or not.

RE: Toledo's New Defensive Coordinator
yeah, everyone has been saying the staff lacks experience.now, we bring in a dc who has 9 yrs exp as a D1 dc,6 yrs exp as a 1aa hc, and additional coaching exp at big ten and midwest schools. i like it. we've got enough young go getters on the staff. there was need for a guy who's been around. lord knows, what he and hazell did w kent's d was special. true, purdue was terrible last yr, but they have had problems on d for a while.

RE: Toledo's New Defensive Coordinator
yeah, he has everything people on this board hate. Experience, experience under Jim Tressel, experience as a D1 DC. Oh, and experience with his brother who is Jim Heacock who was Ohio States DC after Dantonio, and up till two yeaRS AGO (the same won who coached two NC game defenses). Plus, extensive ohio recruiting connections. Purdue's talent level last year was extremely low maybe why his defense stats weren't up to UT standards. Maybe, this guy won't run off for a couple thousand more to IOWA STATE as the RB coach did...now that's a powerhouse. Anyway, can't be any worse than the last couple DC hires.

I think this is a good hire! Experience as a DC, HC and has coached some good players and teams! KSU has always been bad but they had a decent D that was a bunch of ball hawks for a couple of years while he was the DC. Purdue stunk but it was only the coaching staffs first year and he was the safeties coach not DC. Look how awful KSU was again this year. Like that he has a little gray hair this staff needs that! May be able to help Matt along being that he has had HC experience! Sounds like he is a pretty good recruiter as well!

Unless we go 10-2 or better he will be a bum as evaluated by posters anyway, so I will wait to comment until I meet him and watch some practices.

Purdue is usually a good team in the Big Ten...oh wait.

I remember NIU and Lynch completely torching the Purdue defense this past season at Purdue.

RE: Toledo's New Defensive Coordinator
I don't see this outwardly as a bad pick. Kent State did have a pretty good defense while he was there as pointed out by several of you. The years of experience including that of being a head coach fit the profile of what this young staff was missing. True, Purdue hasn't been a power of late but he likely was coaching a defensive backfield made up mostly of returnees, and can't be completely to blame for any shortcomings. Let's give him a nice welcome back to Toledo and see what he can accomplish thru a season. The pessimist has spoken...if I can be hopeful about this addition, surely most of the rest of you can be as well!
