Ono just said the search is underway but he is strongly encouraging the interim to try to get the job full time.

She's in a tough spot, but I was underwhelmed by her message.

Put a stripper pole in the AD's office for Desiree, invite the big donors over for a night of fun.

That presser was not nearly the reassuring message I had hoped for.

Just guessing there may be some diversity requirements in searching for candidates. Having her apply formally probably helps check those boxes. Based on her CV, she doesn't seem to fit the bill for reputation as a well-connected, big fund raiser and a program builder.

RE: New athletic director
If we truly do a national search, clearly establish the skills sets and leadership experience we are looking for, have a plan to leverage toward P5 status............there's absolutely zero chance she gets the job. Sorry. She may have a lot of potential, but if she is who we end up with..........count me as convinced we're just trying to save money, go cheap, and it's a sign we're hunkering down for a long stay in a Tier 2 underfunded AAC model. She's mainly been involved on the Women's sports administration side, administrative side, and contractual oversight. All critical functions.......but easily supported by a #2 and NOT what is needed by us at this time for our Athletic Department LEADER. Virtually zero fundraising leadershp experience, no experience in over-seeing major building renovation projects (look at the Toledo AD's background), no strong ties to other conferences or schools that could help.

I can't believe Ono verbally came out and encouraged her. I like Ono.....but his own inexperience could really result in a blown hire if he's already pushing her.

I don't think so. Plenty of interims are named with the understanding that they are just holding the fort down. If nothing else, he just announced that he really believes she has the qualifications we are looking for.

I think is Ono is just being nice. Besides the search firm stuff, I am sure his phone and email is getting blown
up with solid candidates. These D1 gigs don't open up everyday.

No way she gets the job. UC will get a proven AD from a mid level school or an assistant/associate from a major program. Nothing against her, but we need experience in the position.

Quote:O’Brien gets 5-year extension to contract
Deal for Rockets’ AD runs through July, 2021

BY RYAN AUTULLO
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
10/2/2013

The University of Toledo announced that it agreed to a five-year contract extension with athletic director Mike O’Brien through July, 2021.

O’Brien’s previous deal was set to expire in July, 2016.

O’Brien, 60, will make $245,000 in annual base salary, an increase of about $36,000 from his previous contract. His salary, which ranks sixth in the Mid-American Conference, matches those of recently hired athletic directors at Bowling Green State University and Eastern Michigan.

O’Brien will receive a social membership at Inverness Club, and the university has agreed to contribute $25,000 annually to his retirement.

News of a new deal has been expected since June, when university president Dr. Lloyd Jacobs told The Blade he soon planned to extend O’Brien’s contract.

“Throughout his tenure Mike O’Brien has elevated the Toledo Rockets onto the national stage, while prioritizing the ‘student’ in our student-athletes,” Jacobs said. “Guided by his leadership, our student-athletes have achieved unprecedented athletic and academic excellence.

“Our community can be very proud of its athletics program under Mike’s leadership. With all Mike has accomplished, I am so impressed by his drive and desire to continue to excel and to inspire those around him to greater effort and achievement. The University of Toledo and the Mid-American Conference are the beneficiaries.”

O’Brien is in his 12th year at Toledo.

“I would like to thank Dr. Jacobs and the Board of Trustees for the support they have shown not only to me but to the entire athletics program during my tenure,” O’Brien said in a statement. “I have had the good fortune to be surrounded by incredible student-athletes, coaches, and staff who are committed to helping make the University of Toledo such a vital part of our community.”

Doubt we will be hiring a 60-year old from the MAC. Nothing against him, but we need someone with ties to either the ACC (preferably), or the Big 12.
