Impressive resume's. Not sure if there's anything to make of it that they're all from Ohio. Good local recruiting there.

Exercise Science? What is that, sports trainer? Seems to be a lot of those and OU is the cradle of coaching education.

Take out the top numbers and see how the average drops? I think that's kind of how Math works. What's the surprise?

Thanks for saving me the trouble. Can't imagine these guys GPAs would raise the average of a 65 man squad much. If they were all 4.0s it wouldn't raise it much.

My point is all we ever hear about is academics is number one on the fb team . With that being said, over 100 players are on the team and we base a coach bonus on GPA, and 4 get honored. It will change as some of the high GPA players graduated. I am not trying to down grade the 4 that got honored, congrats to them. I just feel the PR is off base of what is really going on.

It's a very delicate situation. Unluckily, quite a few of the most talented football players in America are not the most talented students. Any school could recruit only above average to great academic players and the coach could/would be fired about every two to three years. Recruit only the most talented players and you have a poor GPA and I believe a culture that becomes uncontrollable. So, coaching staffs try to get the best academic people they can who still are competitive. If that is kickers and offensive line are the brainy groups, so be it.

Of course kickers are going to be the smartest players. They develop a skill set that allows them to play and get good looking women but precludes getting hit by angry 300 pound men who get penalized and publicly called out if they DO hit them. Those guys SHOULD be getting 3.8s and up.

Sometimes I think we get caught up that everyone going to college is there to be a brain surgeon. Most people in college are really quite average. A kid on a football (or any university athletic) schedule that can maintain a "C" even with all the tutoring in the world, has my respect. 3.5s? 3.8s in things like Engineering and Bioscience? Crap on a stick, I can't imagine being that smart let alone that...disciplined.

I agree with your points. I would still rather see us become the Stanford of the MAC, with being respected for both our football team and academics. As these kids with hard degrees graduate, they can afford to give more back to UT. Let's face it not many are going to the NFL. We as taxpayers fund scholarships, I prefer to fund ones that understand how important giving back is. Toledo has high ranked engineering, business and law programs, they have all produced great and generous alums. If you are getting a free education why not make the most of it, good grades and good athletes seem to make sense. We settle way to often, then end up with a kid that didn't realize the next level wouldn't be like high school, they can play ball but can't cut the grades. Ends up they leave the program and a scholarship is tied up until next semester, nobody wins in that situation.

I'd take straight C's, good citizens and a MAC championship everyday. The random brain surgeon makes for a good story, but give me a 300 lb bone crushing "criminal justice" or "recreation" major any day. Once you have a college degree, you can't take it away and a degree opens doors vs. no degree.
