Yes, it's like semantic real estate. Annex it when it's low and worthless, add a few bells and whistles to increase the value and status, the release it when people would do anything to use it.

It's worked well for the N-Word. People want to use it so bad, I could probably charge $10 a pop to give somebody permission to say it.

You have to understand the psychology behind it all. It's about taking something negative that is being thrown at you, taking ownership of it, and turning it into a term of endearment or something positive.
