The fieldhouse UT played basketball in prior to Savage Hall/Arena, was it really called just the "Field House"?

RE: Toledo history question
At some point it became "Memorial Field House"...I think...but I don't know when. Don't think that it was ever "named" after anyone, at any point, though...that was back in the days before everything had a sponsor.

It's now an academic building. There are murals of a cheering crowd at either end. Used to have my track locker in the basement. I tried to get it when they refurbished the building but it was crunched in the removal process.

It was just the Field House. Most schools had a building called the field house where there was track, basketball , wrestling etc.

RE: Toledo history question
Wasn't the Field House one of the original buildings on Campus ... or close to it? As such, there was no one to name it after, and no donors or sponsors to demand recognition.

The Field House as far as i know. As a student, we had to wait in line to get a seat for the big games.

I was there. Lots of bands played there. Poco, Edgar Winter, Taj Mahal, It's a Beautiful Day, Steely Dan were a few I saw there.

RE: Toledo history question
What a great question. I don't have the answer. When I was a student there we called it The Field House. We drew cards for our class schedule in those days. The card said "Field House" with the area listed for a class in that building. You are bring back some nice memories about some of our college days. There was a "weight" room, which was a tiny fenced in cage under the southwest corner of the stand. There were a few free weights, usually none, so very few athletes used it. The batting cage was up on a balcony at the west end and gave a great view of girls dorm. Best of all was the dingy under ground tunnel between the Field House and University Hall. It was always an experience walking through it.

I hope someone can answer the question about the original name.

Thanks for bring back memories of a wonderful time in our lives!

He was doing graduate work in kinesiology and was working with athletes like Aaron Bivens, etc. trying to improve performance by focusing on supporting muscle groups instead of the major.

Thanks guys. I was doing some research on the 75-76 WMU bball team and wasn't sure of the location where UT beat WMU to end their 19-game (20 going back to the previous season) winning streak. Savage Hall opened the next season.

He appears to be very succesful at it. I run into Bivens a lot at art stuff and he looks like he could suit up and play this year so the guy must be good. 03-wink

As I recall my UT history, the Field House was the second major building (after University Hall) to be built on the then new Bancroft Campus and it was completed about 1931. With the opening of Centennial Hall in 1976, followed somewhat later by the opening of the "new" Rec Center, the Field House became much less utilized and became primarily a storage area with some limited low priority office and lab space with the court area still available if needed (for kids programs or intramural sports).

Starting maybe in the late 1980's, but certainly by the 1990's and into the 2000's, the Field House was frequently considered in the countless planning scenarios that are very much an integral part of the modern university system (because every new high level administrator has to put his or her personal stamp on any and every future plan---the predecessor's plans are never acceptable and have to be redone from scratch---I call it resume building for either their next job or their legacy---so with the high administrative turnover during that period, there was no shortage of time consuming planning activity always going on).

But I digress----although in the case of the Field House it was realized from the outset that it would be cheaper to tear it down and build a new building, it was also realized early on that the building's historic significance precluded its total demolition. At that point (sometime in late 1990s or early 2000s) it was officially renamed the "Memorial Field House". After several false planning starts, it was actually "renovated" which involved tearing down everything except the exterior walls and turning it into an academic building.

The new Memorial Field House opened around 2008 as an academic building and, to their credit, the architects did an outstanding job. It is quite a nice modern building on the inside while still appearing pretty much the same as always from the outside.

Disclaimer----this is based on my personal recollections which were not fact checked, and thus may contain some errors, particularly regarding time-frames.

EDIT--I hadn't read the second page of the thread when I posted so I missed eastisbest's post that gives 1997 as the year the building was renamed the "Memorial Field House"

RE: Toledo history question
I have a mostly complete collection of UT yearbooks starting from the very first one (early 1920's) until the last yearbook was published in the early 1970's.

I'll try and dig a few of them and add some of the history and scan some photos into this thread.

Could do the same thing with the Glass Bowl too.

I think I ran across UT1's freshman photo in one of the yearbooks from the 1930's, I'll try and include that as well.... 05-stirthepot

Was that his first freshman year or one of the other ones?
