RE: Well we need a new soccer coach.
Noland makes no friends by dropping soccer. I mean we have a stadium built for it on the money of two big donors that probably wouldn't like it very much. The days of fully funding the minor sports is almost over. There is just no reason to fully fund sports that nobody cares about. It's all about priorities.

Should ETSU keep men's soccer? Why not let that one ease on outa here with the coach? Besides, after ten years of grossly wasted athletic expenditures, it's obviously time to fix athletic spending.
Yes, keep men's soccer/North Korean kickball. And this is coming from the person who has pissed and moaned about it head and shoulders more than anyone else. Fund it at the level normal schools at our level fund it (we spend more on soccer than Memphis does), allow one international trip a year for recruiting and the rest comes from instate/walkons. If the coaches want more, then they need to do what other soccer programs do and run a pantload of camps for little kids.
But definitely keep it, if nothing more soccer guys graduate 100% typically and it makes the department's APR look really nice.

I'm not sure where you get your data from, but Memphis spends over twice as much on soccer as ETSU does on operating expenses ($206k vs $96k) and about $235k more on total expenses ($777k vs $538k). As far as recruiting, you give each program a recruiting budget and then each program uses it as they see fit. You don't set restrictions on where you recruit. The previous coaching staff would fly out at odd times and from farther away airports overseas to minimize costs as well as stay with family and friends when they traveled to foreign countries. They were very good at maximizing their recruiting budget. Why would anyone discourage that???

RE: Well we need a new soccer coach.
Also, the SoCon currently has seven schools that sponsor men's soccer. Four of those schools are leaving the conference. The three new schools all sponsor men's soccer. You have to have six schools sponsoring a sport to maintain an NCAA auto bid right? I doubt the SoCon would be thrilled with anybody dropping men's soccer and forfeiting the auto bid. I would assume men's soccer is a requirement for ETSU in the SoCon.

I misspoke, Calabrese was paid more. And listen, I don't think for a second it should be eliminated, but I do think it needs to be funded at a comparable level to the conference ETSU competes in. I get you love the sport, and that's great, it's just the overwhelming majority of people in East Tennessee could care less about soccer.

I think it's seven . . .
Quote:
The new rules basically stipulate that a conference must have seven active Division I members that sponsor men's and women's basketball and that the conference sponsor a minimum of six men's sports and six women's sports.

Does anyone know if Belmont is still floating around without a conference? I think they were left homeless because the OVC only has women's soccer. Belmont would make a good 7th soccer team for the Southern Conference if that is indeed the case.

RE: Well we need a new soccer coach.
I checked. It looks like, as of the 2014 season, Belmont will be the only independent D1 soccer program in the country. If it weren't for the Sun Belt affiliation, Georgia State would have made an even better geographical fit.
Copied from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Divisi...s_(soccer)
Belmont University – Its all-sports conference, the Ohio Valley Conference, only sponsors women's soccer.
Georgia State University – Will leave the independent ranks in 2014 when its all-sports league, the Sun Belt Conference, reinstates men's soccer.[1]
Howard University - Will leave the independent ranks in 2014 to become a men's soccer affiliate of the Sun Belt.[1]
University of the Incarnate Word – Will leave the independent ranks in 2014 to become a men's soccer affiliate of the Western Athletic Conference.[2]
New Jersey Institute of Technology - Will leave the independent ranks in 2014 to become a men's soccer affiliate of the Sun Belt.[1]

I gotta admit, the length of time it's taking to fill this position is odd.

Socon has only three men's soccer teams left... the new schools will give them a total of six. Not sure how the NCAA automatic bid works in this activity.

RE: Well we need a new soccer coach.
I think six is the minimum number to hold a "conference" and receive an automatic bid. It honestly makes me think if the SoCon ever went back to 12 for basketball they might give Winthrop a serious first look. Really good facilities, they sponsor men's soccer and have decent basketball usually.
Even though I'm not a fan of the sport, if they've got ETSU on the jersey I want to see them win.
