FINAL: USM 75 ODU 60
Battle for #1 in C-USA.
ODU is 1st in CUSA standings at 3-0
USM is tied for 2nd at 3-1.
Thoughts on the game: ODU has just finished a 3 game conference road stretch in which they went 3-0. Not bad huh? It's always tough to win on the road in college basketball so you gotta tip your hat to that. However, the schools they beat were 4-12 FAU, 8-8 FIU, and 7-7 ECU. Again, it's always tough to win on the road, but i think we pull this out.
Game prediction:
USM 70
ODU 62

I'd imagine it will be a low scoring affair. In what little I've seen of ODU, they've look pretty good in their half court defense and methodical in their half court offense. It certainly won't be the up and down game that La Tech was for a while.

ODU will likely try to slow the game down. I think USM is too talented for them though and will get the W.
ODU bounces back with a W against Tulane and USM goes on to beat ECU on Saturday.

Both teams are top 40 in the country in scoring defense so I agree the score should be in the 60's or low 70's.
I think we have the advantage because of our depth. ODU's starters average 28+ minutes per game.

I concur about the low-scoring affair; I don't think either team is scoring more than 70-73 unless it goes to OT. I think we'll crank out the full-throttle hustle for this game as well. This "#1 in CUSA" thing, however short, has been the first thing to go right for our team in years. I imagine we'll fight like a team possessed to maintain it.
Now we just need our fans to pack the house and make it loud. Exciting times!

This will be a good one. May come down to the end. I think we'd win somewhat easily at home, but this will be a struggle on the road.

Nice to have a meaningful home game. Haven't had one in a year and a half.

I'm curious.....does ODU press the inbound or mostly set up the half court D?

We mainly stick to half-court defense. This game isn't going to be "the ball barely touches the court it's passed so much" game like it was against La Tech.

The most impressive thing about the two F_U wins, is we did it without our leading scorer. Hoping to have his +18pts/gm back. Look if we were any good we wouldn't have an RPI of 185. We don't have the bodies to press, we use a 6-6 guy at center. We don't have any seniors (that count). The Ted should be rocking, hope it's a good game.

this is going to be an interesting game....haven't watched you guys, but my guess is USM pulls it out late by 6+ unless you guys have continued success from the perimeter.
we will force inside play unless the perimeter is left unguarded and we get hot....only see the latter in spurts even if the % is up
should be a hard fought, physical game

The staff is keeping it quite about Bacote (2nd leading scorer in CUSA) guess make it a little harder to scout ODU. Think of playing a bunch a young guards and a 6-7 freshman that's ODU and the problem with young teams is consistency.

Looking at ODU's season stats and wondering if they actually practice free throws. Outside of Bacote who's at 80.7% the rest of the starters are under 56%. I thought we were having an off year at the line.

They'll probably shoot over 90% against us now.

RE: USM (16-3, 3-1 RPI # 40) vs. ODU (9-9, 3-0 RPI 185) 1/23/14 game thread.
Our teams are historically bad at free throws. However, a few years ago, we had the best homecourt advantage in the country when it came to opposing teams FT % at the Ted, so it worked out...
Definitely going to the game. Oughta be fun! I expect a 6-10 point loss, but if we win, it'll be huge for the recovery of our program.
