OT kinda: Goodell talking about eliminating the extra point
Since this could trickle down through the ranks if approved, I was curious what the board thought.

I personally don't get the point of benefit....his following example of making the game more "lively" is just silly.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell understands that, and he told Rich Eisen of the NFL Network that extra points may be removed from the game, in an effort to keep things lively.

Bellichek had an interesting thought....

“I would be in favor of not seeing it be an over 99 percent conversion rate. It’s virtually automatic. That’s just not the way the extra point was put into the game. It was an extra point that you actually had to execute and it was executed by players who were not specialists, they were position players.”

Eliminating it altogether just seems silly, but running it from the line of scrimmage may have merit.

thoughts?

I would be in favor of eliminating kicking as a means to score the extra point. Maybe a scrimmage play from the one for 1 point and a scrimmage play from the five for 2 points.

Never is a long time. My suggestion would give good defensive teams an advantage, not the team with the better kicker. It would probably significantly reduce the number of overtime games.

RE: OT kinda: Goodell talking about eliminating the extra point
Goodell is proposing making tuchdowns worth 7 points and keeping the option of the conversion. If the conversion is made an extra point would be awarded, if not a point would be deducted and the TD would then be worth 6 points.

I don't know if I like this for college football as the extra point kicks are not nearly as automatic as in the NFL.

I think adding the concept of the CFL "rouge" or "single" would be a lot of fun...especially in the college game.

Would need larger stadiums as the endzones would need to be 25 yards deep in the very center.

Are they going to ban field goals under 35 yards too?

And the all important question: how would this affect fantasy football? 03-lmfao

While not the same thing, I did love the XFLs run for the ball to get the first posession.

Unless the team had the option to not attempt an extra point, that would be the same net result as going for two now.

Why? If the team moved the ball down there on offense or got a turnover on defense they would deserve the opportunity for three points.

I'm in favor of making the extra point a true bonus by increasing its difficulty.

If the criteria is no points on something nearly automatic that's performed by specialists, that's also what a short field goal has become.

I just don't get what taking away the XP does. It maybe doesn't add anything to the game, but I don't see what taking it away adds either....besides maybe 5 more minutes the NFL would use to cram 10 more commercials down our collective throat.

^ I think they want to fill the same time slot with more commercials as well.

Well, it eliminates any injuries that might occur on a play whose result is almost certain.

moving it back? to where? these guys are pretty much automatic from 35 and in...

maybe a narrowing of the goal posts?? (quirky, I know, but possible)

I'm intrigued by the line of scrimmage potential...what you said earlier seems to have potential

RE: OT kinda: Goodell talking about eliminating the extra point
I think it would be interesting to revive the old Arena Football League idea of dual goal posts. Have the standard width posts there for a single point, but use a second, very narrow set of posts set five or ten yards further back count for two points (the AFL used to have a second set of lines on the backstop behind the end zone, if I recall correctly). Move the two point conversion back to the seven yard line and have it count for three. Reduce standard touchdowns to five points apiece to encourage more strategic use of the extra point tries earlier in the game as well as increase the value of field goals relative to touchdowns (since they would still be worth three points).

Well, make all field goals a minimum of 40 yards. If a team makes it to the one and decides to kick a FG move the ball back to the 23 before allowing the kick. That may increase the number of gambles on fourth down from inside the five.

RE: OT kinda: Goodell talking about eliminating the extra point
Go to rugby rules.....you make the touchdown, you kick the extra point! Now if you really want to make it interesting, the kick has to be made relative to where the TD occured...so a fade route would make an almost impossible angle and would be far from automatic.

It would eliminate some of these show offs as well. Deion Sanders would have looked pretty stupid after a touchdown dance and then an attempt from the corner that goes 5 yards.........

Goddell is Jerry Jones's "puppet"...What a (bleeping) stupid idea, trying to take extra points and kickoffs out of the game, and wanting to add an extra team to the playoffs, just to give the Dullass Cowturds a lifeline reward due to their annual mediocrity. He is destroying the essence of the sport of professional football...No wonder the players as a whole, despise his a**!!! He's right up there with Bud Selig as one of the worst major league sports commissioners ever.
