Is Your School For or Against Stipends?
I want to know if your school is officially for or against srudent-athlete stipends. Also, I want to know what your take on the subject is.
I know Marshall is against stipends for players, but the way I undertand , C-USA as a whole is for them.

Stipends are amounts of money given to student-athletes to pay for "Every Day Expenses" such as toothbrushes, razors, etc.

And how does this give the P5 more ground over G5.

It holds athletes on a higher pedestal than any other student. Some students work their arses off to get academic scholarships and then rack up student loans paying for non covered boarding expenses. How long has college football been played? And your telling me that it's rougher now on players than it ever has been. It's a load of crap.

Players already have better college lives than probably 75% of students. They get free gear, free food, free tutors, free books... etc....

If anything, I would be for a seperate loan program for student athletes. Maybe a small or zero% interest rate where they can take out as much or as little as they want up to a certain amount per year. The payments to repay it back start 90 days after you graduate or leave school.

wrong. football players are not allowed to hold outside jobs to generate income. most students on academic scholarships are allowed to work. my sister in law is on a research scholarship at Vandy and one of the conditions is that she not work an outside job because they want all her attention on research and study. because she is not allowed an outside job she gets a stipend to pay for housing, food, clothes and general living expenses. if the terms your scholarship forbids you to work it should include living expenses to compensate.

RE: Is Your School For or Against Stipends?
My question (and 1 that was on one of USM's message boards) is that over half of the football scholarship players are already getting full pell grants as well so will these stipend nullify those receiving full athletic scholarship and a pell grants? IN MY OPINION.....If said scholarship athletes get full pell grants AND stipends, these said scholarship athletes could be getting over $2,500 in cash PER SEMESTER in their pocket. To me that is more than covering full cost of attendance...that's called PAYING TO PLAY.
And to my knowledge it's football and mens basketball??? If so when does Title IX start becoming an issue again

Of course, none of us can speak officially for our school.
I think all C-USA school's presidents and AD's voted for the stipend at those meetings. Those stipends will not happen unless the NCAA approves so......ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE?

I was generalizing. there is a $2,000 cap on income for athletes that includes grants. if you get a $1500 pell grant that means you can earn $500. If your Pell grant exceeds $2000 you don't get to work. and that $2000 is gross income. Before taxes etc. in other words you don't get an income. They can work during the summer but in todays world they are at school doing summer workouts and don't have the time to work full time to make money for the rest of the year.

I have no idea where UNT stands on this issue.
Personally, I am opposed to it. True "living expenses" are already covered the way things stand, especially considering football players never have to spend a cent on food. The additional stipend would provide spending money in most cases.

Not sure about where UAB as an institution stands. Would like to think that the players are all for getting some "walking around money", as a fan, I'm for players getting something so they won't have to run up against it so much. After seeing the "Fab 5" &, "The U" (even though I can't stand the University of Miami, that was one of the most entertaining, funny and revealing documentaries I'd ever seen, gave me a different perspective on what many players are experiencing, & it's not always glitter and glamour), I am very much in favor of our UAB Blazers getting stipends.

RE: Is Your School For or Against Stipends?
The issue of paying the players is very complex. I've always viewed the subject with the thought that the education the student athletes received was the payment for representing their university on the field.
If they need to create a system that allows for the student athletes to earn more money for living expenses, then they need to structure an NCAA monitored work study type opportunity, with a similar pay structure to standard work study programs, that can work around the difficult schedules of class and practice. Just cutting checks to the student athletes for being on a team is a really, really, bad idea, and that type of system will self destruct.
I honestly believe there has to be a better solution then what is being discussed in San Diego.

Not sure what ECU's official line is BUT when you talk about stipends FOR ALL OF YOUR SPORTS the costs add up pretty fast. I think you have to really think about how Student Athletes can earn money during/outside the school year because some of the regulations cripple what they could earn as that pocket money.
