Lawrence determined not to miss the rest of the season

Jermaine Lawrence

Jermaine Lawrence is still wearing a boot on his left foot to protect his turf toe injury but the freshman forward said Saturday he does not expect to miss the rest of the season.

Whether he’s simply being optimistic remains to be seen. He said he hopes to be out of his boot in a few weeks, which would take him to the end of January but even that’s not a sure thing.

In the meantime, the Bearcats are continuing to win with a very small front line. They outlasted USF, 61-54, Saturday.

“We know we’re one of the smallest teams in America,” Sean Kilpatrick said, “but like I said at the beginning of the season, we’re a small team with a lot of heart.”

Even with all that heart, though, the lack of size on the front line almost meant the end of their nine-game winning streak Saturday against a strong, physical USF front line.

“Justin (Jackson) got two early fouls,” Mick Cronin said. “Jermaine Lawrence not playing hurt us today more than any game since his injury because this team is so big. And David didn’t really have a good game today. He wasn’t a factor for us at all. We’re running around out there with Justin, who’s maybe 6-8, against this team.”

Cronin said UC’s lack of size is a concern moving forward.

“That’s why you saw us playing a lot more zone today,” Cronin said. “I probably should have started the game in zone or went to it earlier before Justin got his second (foul) but our man-to-man has been so great for us.”

What bugs me about foul trouble is that coaches give themselves foul trouble. UC had a decent lead when Jackson went out of the game. Lets say UC builds that lead to double digits by halftime and Jackson only picks up one more foul, isn't that a better tradeoff than having him sit on the bench and watching the lead vanish.

If would rather have a 15 point lead and have Jackson fouled out of the game with 5 minutes to go than a single digit lead with a few minutes.

It's an interesting conundrum. You would also hate to have him with 3 fouls in the first half and then pick up his 4th foul early in the second half, which would bench him for effectively the entire half.

I also think you have to base it on the player who committed the fouls. Since JJ plays so hard on defense and is prone to picking up idiotic fouls- I think Mick made the right move. If it was a guy like SK or a Cashmere Wright I think you can go ahead and play him an trust him not to do something stupid.

Huggins would always bench a guy with 2 personals before the half as well.

I would rather have my best players available to me as coach in crunch time. If we have a double digit lead so be it. If it is a close game I want my best players on the court in the last five minutes.

Not exactly. Remember that big OOC game against UNC...we were kicking butt. Danny Fortson picked up 2 fouls in the first half and Huggins left him out there for some reason...of course, Danny picks up his 3rd with a minute left in the half. Game over. He got blasted over that decision. Rightly so.

Like Mick says frequently, the goal is to win the game not the first half. The strategy seems to be working pretty well. And at least JJ has fresh legs when the other team gets tired.

When would the possibility of a medical redshirt come into play or has he already played to many games or minutes ?
