Why is Title IX always blamed for losses to men's programs. I realize it calls for equal opportunity, but let me introduce the following:
sports with the highest scholarship limit
FBS football - 85
FCS football - 63
DII football - 36
Women's Rowing - 20
Women's X-County/Track and field - 18
Men's & women's hockey - 18
Roster limit
NFL - 53
FBS - 105
regular season games played
NFL - 16
FBS - 12
maximum playoff games
NFL - 4
FBS - 3
FCS - 5
It seems to me that the cause for the men's decline istn't Title IX so much as it is just the huge amount of scholarships at the highest level. I would think that would be okay if there was a parallel with the NFL. But the professional ranks, where multi-billion dollars are at stake, has half the roster size for more games.
So I ask, doesn't it make sense that the bigger reason men's sports are cut is that football takes the Lions share of scholarships? In places that don't have football, like former SBC-member Denver, there are a lot of more obscure sports like men's ice hockey and wrestling. If the FBS limit were in the 70's and FCS limit were in the 50's, there'd be less of an issue with Title IX.
The future FBS will address your logic/idea with more football scholorships and pay for football players so a reduction is not a possible answer.
Way to wiff there champ. That is at all nothing of what I was getting at when I posted what I did. My last paragraph wasn't a proposal, but was saying Title IX gets the blame, yet football scholarships are high.
When people say wrestling or men's soccer aren't being offered because of Title IX, I counter with wrestling and men's soccer aren't being offered because football has so many scholarships compared to other sports and compared to the professional ranks.
The NFL has a 53 man active roster. They can also make trades, or sign new players, or call up practice squad guys at virtually any time.
So how many players does an NFL team REALLY have access to?
That's why there are so many NCAA players on scholarship.
I guarantee you it isn't 52 players. Practice squad is about ten players and most teams trade rarely during the season.

We don't have Softball or Men's soccer. I think we end up regretting both a lot of times. Though, I am kind of interested in sanctioning Rugby first, since we are already one of the best in the country at it.

South didn't have football until 5 years ago, we lost men's soccer 20 years ago due to Title IX, so your theory has a big ol hole in it.

I guess one school means everyone else isn't accurate.
Or maybe USa is the outlier. Make no mistake, most men's sports that have been cut were at schools with football. Fact.
As for USA, what sports were either cut or added to accommodate the 85 football scholarships? Also, not calling you out but having a discussion, what proof is their that soccer was cut due to Title IX and not other considerations. For example, football wasn't dropped at UTA due to title IX, but lack of finances and student support.

RE: Does your school have a Men's soccer team?
We also have men's and women's:
Golf
Cross Country
Tennis
Basketball
Track and Field (Indoor and Outdoor)
as well as both Soccer (men's and women's)
plus
Men's: Wrestling & Baseball
Women's: Field Hockey, Softball and Volleyball
Had seen where App was adding or thinking of adding swimming and diving as well. Used to have skiing and fencing I believe.
We have club ice hockey and would like to see women's beach volleyball and briefcase roll walking.

App State was asked to stay in the SoCon for soccer.
Not trying to make waves, but evidently the SoCon didn't invite GaSo to play there also evidently.
At least that's what a couple of GaSo posters wrote. May, and probably has only due to geography
and travel for members though.

I'm not sure that we will be in the SoCon long term. In a recent article in the WD, it stated that field hockey and wrestling would remain where they are currently but all other sports would see an increase in travel and missed class time.

I assume fencing has always been a club sport, it was when I was there and I bet it still is. I knew a guy that played on the first year of the club ice hockey team, they would drive to all the way to Spruce Pine three nights a week for practice-apparently there is an ice rink there, or was anyway. I played club lacrosse back before it was "cool", and we practiced and played games where the indoor practice facility is now, right after the club football team. I thought it was kind of cool that App had both a club and varsity football team at the time. I saw somewhere that there is a club quidditch team at App (you know like in Harry Potter) but enough geeking out in the club sports world.

How many full members are needed for the SBC to sponsor the sport. JMU or Mo St could be four, through in affiliates like Howard or Belmont and roll with it.

Email Benson and ask him. Would think they might do it for six,
especially if there are any possibilities that some other SBC school might add it.

This was the main reason I asked. I was hoping enough current members sponsored mens soccer to maybe add it to the Sun Belt.

In an earlier thread believe most if not all SB-C teams dropped it.
May be wrong, some may play in other conferences. Noticed at least one
played it independently as evidently a club sport, so possibility of their school sponsoring it
if cost wouldn't be too bad. That would probably be the biggest thing to overcome once they
have dropped it.

It has been said from Ga. Southern officials that we will not be in the SoCon in soccer. That has been said pretty much since after the announcement last March that we were joining the Sun Belt. Apparently the SoCon does not want us. Oh well, I guess we will be an independent until and unless the SBC starts sponsoring soccer. Honestly it is not like our soccer program has been that strong anyway.
