TAMPA, Fla. -- Sean Kilpatrick scored 18 points to help lead No. 19 Cincinnati past South Florida 61-54 on Saturday.

Shaquille Thomas added 10 points for the Bearcats (17-2, 6-0 AAC), who have won 10 straight games.

South Florida (10-8, 1-4) got 15 points from Javontae Hawkins. Bulls point guard Anthony Collins missed his eighth game in a row due to left knee soreness.

Cincinnati extended its streak of holding an opponent to under 70 points to 26 consecutive games, which is the nation's longest active stretch. The school record of 35 games that spanned three seasons started with the Bearcats' 71-59 1962 NCAA championship game victory over Ohio State.

TAMPA — The University of Cincinnati Bearcats used an 11-2 late in the game to break a 47-47 tie, then held off South Florida in the closing minutes to post a 61-54 victory over the Bulls on Saturday in the Sun Dome.

UC appeared to put the game out of reach when it took a 58-49 lead on Justin Jackson’s dunk with 2:23 remaining, but the Bulls came back to get within four on Javontae Hawkins’ 3-pointer with 1:09 to play. Sean Kilpatrick sealed the victory with two free throws with 14.2 seconds remaining.

No. 19 UC (17-2, 6-0 American Athletic Conference) has won 10 in a row. The Bearcats secured their first victory over the Bulls in Tampa since 2005. USF (10-8, 1-4) has lost four of its last five.

Kilpatrick led UC with 18 points to pass Roger McClendon for fifth place on UC’s career scoring list with 1,797 points. Shaquille Thomas scored 10 for UC, all in the first half. Hawkins led USF with 15 points.

UC, which led by four at halftime, increased its lead to seven early in the second half, but USF came back, using an 8-0 run to go ahead, 35-34. With the score tied at 47-47, USF went 4:03 without scoring and the Bearcats pulled ahead, 52-47.

With the shot clock running down and UC leading by three, Titus Rubles scored on an offensive rebound off a missed Kilpatrick shot. After Rudd missed a 3-pointer for USF, Kilpatrick scored on an assist from Justin Jackson and the Bearcats led, 56-49. A Jackson dunk put UC ahead, 58-49 with 2:59 to play.

USF out-rebounded UC, 36-30, but shot only 39.2 percent from the field. UC made 7 of 19 shots from 3-point range and 12 of 16 from the free throw line.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 19-9 lead midway through the first half and appeared on their way to an easy victory. But the Bulls outscored them, 15-3, to take a 24-22 lead with 2:38 left in the half.

Struggling to get the ball inside against USF’s zone defense and with Justin Jackson on the bench for most of the first half with two fouls, the Bearcats went 7:14 without a field goal until Ge’Lawn Guyn made a 3-pointer with 2:20 left in the half.

Moments later, Guyn delivered another 3-pointer and the Bearcats outscored the Bulls, 8-2, to take a 30-26 lead into halftime.

Got to the bottom of the second paragraph, then immediately came to the conclusion that an intern wrote this article.

"The University of Cincinnati Bearcats used an 11-2 late in the game to break a 47-47 tie"

Is this a sentence?

How can a BASKETBALL writer of his longevity not mention
how much ZONE UC used?

Bulls put scare into Cincy before Bearcats pull away

South Florida’s Josh Heath calls a timeout as Cincinnati’s Shaquille Thomas reaches for the ball. USF has lost four of its first five American Athletic Conference games.

BY MICHAEL MANGANELLO Tribune correspondent

Published: January 18, 2014|Updated: January 18, 2014 at 09:05 PM

TAMPA — Playing against the first-place team in the American Athletic Conference, South Florida showed fight and resilience, but it wasn’t quite enough Saturday.

The Bulls were beaten 61-54 by No. 19 Cincinnati in front of 5,322 at the Sun Dome, but they showed promise in bouncing back from a listless performance against SMU with a much better showing against the Bearcats.

SMU ran circles around the Bulls on Wednesday, racing to 10-0 and 21-4 leads and won 71-54 in USF’s worst effort of the season.

USF (10-8, 1-4) was up to the task against the AAC’s lone remaining unbeaten, finding itself in a 47-47 tie with 8:39 to play, but the Bearcats (17-2, 6-0) closed much better.

“I thought we really competed in this game and we gave ourselves a chance to win but we just came up short,” USF coach Stan Heath said. “I can’t fault my guys’ effort and I can’t fault the effort they played with today. Hopefully it carries over, because if we build on this, we’ll win games.”

The Bulls weathered an early 9-2 deficit and trailed 30-26 at halftime before playing a tight second half.

Twice the Bulls took a second-half lead or tied the game, and twice Cincinnati reclaimed the momentum with a quick 3-pointer on its next possession.

“That’s a really good overall team,” Heath said of the Bearcats. “They have guys that give you six, seven or eight points and it all adds up.”

One of USF’s biggest miscues directly followed a timeout with 2:28 to play and the Bulls trailing 56-49. Cincinnati forward Justin Jackson held the ball on the wing and faked a handoff, before breaking toward the rim for a dunk.

“(Jackson) just tricked us,” Heath said. “He fakes a handoff, we went for it and he went the other way. It’s just one of those things where we got fooled a little bit. (Defender) Zach (LeDay) felt bad about it, but he was trying to play hard defense and he went for the fake.”

That play gave the Bearcats a nine-point lead, their largest of the second half.

“That’s probably what did it,” USF forward Victor Rudd said. “Something like that can’t happen late in the game. When it comes down to a tight game, we’ve got to play better defense than that. That was too easy.”

Guard JaVontae Hawkins contributed a career-high 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting for the Bulls. Rudd and John Egbunu also had double-figure points, with 12 and 10, respectively. Rudd was a rebound short of a double-double.

Sean Kilpatrick led the Bearcats with 18 points.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for USF, with defending national champion Louisville paying a visit to the Sun Dome on Wednesday night.

“It hurts to lose and we certainly need to get things going in the right direction with wins,” Heath said.

CINCINNATI (17-2) — Rubles 2-5 1-2 5, Thomas 3-4 4-4 10, Jackson 3-8 3-5 9, Guyn 3-4 0-0 8, Kilpatrick 7-17 2-3 18, Caupain 1-5 2-2 5, Sanders 2-6 0-0 6, Johnson 0-0 0-0 0, Nyarsuk 0-0 0-0 0. Totals 21-49 12-16 61.

SOUTH FLORIDA (10-8) — Brock 3-6 2-4 8, Rudd 5-13 2-2 12, LeDay 0-2 2-2 2, Allen Jr. 0-4 0-0 0, Egbunu 4-5 2-4 10, Heath 1-5 0-0 2, McLendon 0-1 0-0 0, Hawkins 6-9 1-2 15, Perry 1-6 3-4 5. Totals 20-51 12-18 54.

Halftime—Cincinnati 30-26. 3-Point Goals—Cincinnati 7-19 (Guyn 2-3, Sanders 2-4, Kilpatrick 2-9, Caupain 1-3), South Florida 2-9 (Hawkins 2-3, Allen Jr. 0-1, Brock 0-1, Rudd 0-4). Fouled Out—None. Rebounds—Cincinnati 30 (Caupain 6), South Florida 36 (Rudd 9). Assists—Cincinnati 12 (Rubles 5), South Florida 14 (Heath 6). Total Fouls—Cincinnati 14, South Florida 16. A—5,322.

Kilpatrick leads No. 19 Cincinnati past USF 61-54

Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. -- Sean Kilpatrick got some help in making key baskets as No. 19 Cincinnati continued its hot stretch.

The American Athletic Conference's leading scorer had 18 points and Shaquille Thomas added 10 to help lead Cincinnati past South Florida 61-54 on Saturday.

Troy Caupain and Jermaine Sanders hit key 3-pointers to give Cincinnati (17-2, 6-0 AAC) second-half momentum in winning its 10th straight.

"They took the lead a few times and we immediately buried a 3," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said. "It was something I was really proud of. That's what you're trying to preach is, to continue to win, you can't rely on Sean Kilpatrick every game."

Caupain's trey put the Bearcats up 42-37 during an 8-2 early second-half surge. Sanders had a tiebreaking 3 later in the half to put Cincinnati ahead for good.

South Florida (10-8, 1-4) got 15 points from Javontae Hawkins. Bulls point guard Anthony Collins missed his eighth game in a row due to soreness in his left knee.

"I thought we really competed in this game," USF coach Stan Heath said. "Gave ourselves a chance to win. Just came up short."

Cincinnati extended its streak of holding an opponent to under 70 points to 26 consecutive games, which is the nation's longest active stretch. The school record of 35 games that spanned three seasons started with the Bearcats' 71-59 1962 NCAA championship game victory over Ohio State.

Cincinnati was outrebounded 36-30 by the Bulls, who had 13 turnovers. The Bearcats turned the ball over 11 times.

"It wasn't pretty for us," Cronin said. "Give South Florida credit for that. I thought they did a great job keeping us off the offensive glass, which is really a big part of our offense."

Kilpatrick gave Cincinnati a seven-point lead at 56-49 with a layup with 3 minutes to go.

Hawkins' 3-pointer pulled USF within 58-54 with 70 seconds left, but the Bulls were unable to score again the rest of the way.

After South Florida's Chris Perry tied it at 47, Sanders made a long-distance jumper to give Cincinnati a 50-47 lead with 8 minutes to play. Titus Rubles' layup extended the Bearcats advantage to 52-47 3 minutes later.

"It's a really good overall team," Heath said. "They have different guys that give you six points, seven points, eight points and it all adds up. You can just tell every one of their guys is really committed on that defensive side."

Thomas had 10 points as Cincinnati took a 30-26 halftime advantage.

Cincinnati, which blew a 10-point lead, responded late in the opening half thanks in part to two late 3s from Ge'Lawn Guyn.

Hawkins connected for a 3 and then completed a 15-3 run with a layup that put South Florida ahead 24-22 with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half.

Kilpatrick had the first five points in the game to help Cincinnati go up 9-2 early on. Thomas' rebound basket and a layup by Kilpatrick made it 19-9 midway through the first half.

Kilpatrick moved past Roger McClendon (1985-88) into fifth place on Cincinnati's career scoring list.

Bearcats forward Jermaine Lawrence sat out his fourth consecutive game with a toe injury.

The template is the same for the Tampa Bay On-line writer. As shown in his paragraph 2:

Quote:The Bulls were beaten 61-54 by No. 19 Cincinnati in front of 5,322 at the Sun Dome, but they showed promise in bouncing back from a listless performance against SMU with a much better showing against the Bearcats.

You guys really should quit bitching about Koch putting the attendance in every game recap. He simply does it because he is supposed to.
