On the bright side, think of the money you'll save by not buying tix or donating.

The only thing that'll save us is if all 5 go to 16 teams and we get in one.

RE: NCAA poised to make a new division for the Big 5
If anybody wants to have a reasonable, semi-informed, non-smartazz discussion about this, please go here:

http://csnbbs.com/thread-672699.html

Bottom line is that the remainder of the FBS conferences (G5) will probably be allowed to follow suit with whatever the P5 conferences do, from a financial standpoint, if they choose, and the AAC will choose. The extra scholarships will cause a bit of an issue, but not enough to kill us.

BTW, this is NOT a new division in D1. It is simply an autonomous voting bloc that can do cost of attendance, etc. We are disadvantaged financially by the TV deals and other issues, but we can figure out how to keep up, at least proportionately to where we have always been, and we intend to do that.

It isn't good news, but it isn't doom, either. It is much more of an issue for small-budget schools.

Other than it isn't good for a non football school, what else do you see from a memphis perspective? Should we try to get into a new conference or what? What's going to happen to us if this happens?

RE: NCAA poised to make a new division for the Big 5
"There is only one group that 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, seven days a week is devoted to this enterprise," North Carolina State athletic director Debbie Yow said Thursday. (quote lifted from article)

People who speak in hyperbole like that should NEVER be listened to.

A key word there is "enterprise". College athletics is supposed to be an addendum to the college experience, but nowadays football especially is almost a business, or in her word "enterprise". That situation should not be allowed to proceed further.

If the big schools have extra money they want to use to reduce athletes' cost of attendance, apply that money to the general fund and reduce every student's cost.

RE: NCAA poised to make a new division for the Big 5
We have a 6 year tv deal where the P5 all have 12 or better, yet bigger deals than the AAC....But, If we continue to show Improvement, like in Basketball where we have Uconn/Memphis/Temple/ Cincy/ And i believe Larry Brown will get things rolling at SMU, and then over to Football where we have UCF making Statements, Hopefully we do the same starting next year as well...And if Houston and SMU, Cincy, USF along with Tulane and Tulsa beginning winning a good number of our OOC games, and Getting and Winning the Playoff spot over the next 6 years of our contract then we can try to again increase our value and money deal for the next one....We are creating our Own Digital network and hopefully it too becomes a better stream of revenue but those things too take a little time.....Aresco already said we would try to match what they do, and in a good position to move further up once we develop our new league....Just have to make strides....Remember alot of Bigger P5 schools yes spend alot more money, but with econemy and other things factored in everything runs in cycles....We just have to stay in the cycle, and better be ready for the next changes whenever they are....One Dream, One Team, Memphis....All for one, One for all, All for Memphis....The World Is Ours Memphis....

It depends on whether we (G5 conferences) are allowed to implement the same spending and other rules that the P5 conferences want to implement. Prior media reports have said that we will be allowed to do so, but that hasn't been formally addressed and reported, as of this morning.

If we can, then it will be no different than it is now. We're still at a big disadvantage to the big spending schools, but no more than we always are.

As for getting into a P5 conference, sure, that would be better, if we could do it, b/c their TV and other related revenues are at least $20-25M per school per year larger. But the P5 hasn't shown a lot of interest in adding schools. Since the BCS was formed in 1996 with the 6 AQ leagues, only 2 schools have permanently been added to what is now the P5: Utah and TCU. Louisville will be the 3rd next year. That's it.

Practically every team in the AAC, and a few in the MWC, are working every day to position themselves to be invited. Problem is, you still have to actually be invited.

Our best chance now, by far, is the B12, due to a combo of factors, including conference Grants of Rights, geography, less current members, etc. But it's still a wish, not a reality.

Meanwhile, on with life...

That may be the smartest thing I've ever read on this board. Well done.

We need just one AG with the ball to bring legal action against the NCAA and the Big 5.
