Impact to program...no.

Pure player ability...yes.

Penny had a chance to be one if the all time greats at the next level until his body failed him. He is the player Lebron imitates and modeled his game after. The sky was the limit on what he could have achieved until his knees decided to work against him.

Why isn't Chris Garner on that list?
Statistically, he should be.

Agree.. Garner was very, very good and probably an underrated former player. And what about Willie Becton, he could shoot the rock!

RE: Would you rank Penny over Finch?
I think Finch playing 40 years ago kind of hurts his stock when it comes to ranking all time Tigers. I'm not old enough to have seen him play, but everyone says he seemed to never miss a shot from the corner. Here's my personal Tiger top 10

1. Lee
2. Finch
3. Penny
4. Elliot Perry
5. CDR
6. Lorenzen Wright
7. Andre Turner
8. Rose
9. Bedford
10. Cedric Henderson

* This is based off of my personal observations and hearsay of the older players I didn't get to see in person.

In my opinion, Garner could not carry those 10 sweat towel.

at least 98% of all D1 programs have never had a player in their history with as much talent as Penny had.

He was a once in a lifetime talent. If he hadn't been injured, we are talking about one of the 25 greatest players to ever play the game

Garner was top 10 in NCAA history in steals after he left here. Although I agree probably not good enough for those rankings. They would overrate the 95/96 teams that severely underachieved

I don't remember Cedric making any shots in pressure situations. He was a very good player and a stat stuffer, but he wasn't very clutch, and he tended to disappear when it was important.

RE: Would you rank Penny over Finch?
Age has a lot to do with your perspective, b/c stats don't always tell the whole story, if you never saw them play. I'm surprised DeCourcy got Forest Arnold in there. He definitely belongs. I even forget him myself sometimes, b/c I was so young when I saw him play. Win Wilfong is another who should be in there, but isn't. DeCourcy also left out Larry Kenon, who was probably better than everybody except Lee and Penny, but was only here one year.

As for Penny vs. Finch, they were 2 totally different players. Penny was much more talented, and if I could start my own team, I would pick Penny before Finch. But with Finch and the game on the line, I'm not sure anybody was better. He always knew what to do, and most times, got it done. And he made everybody around him better. And he wasn't even a PG, and certainly wasn't athletic, like Penny, or so many players now. He just had such a high BB IQ, which, looking back, was remarkable for his time.

Being injured in no way takes away how good he was, especially in college and that's what that list is.

He had a solid 10 year career in the league and still enjoys a lucrative endorsement contract. Penny's career, though shortened, was a huge success.

It's hard to compare players of differing eras, but just comparing people who played in the same era, a couple of those choices seem a little weird.

I don't know how Forrest Arnold is on that list and Win isn't and I'd make the same statement about Bill Cook and Dexter (but I'm not sure Bill or Dexter are "top 10").

Regarding the question in the title, Penny could do so many things that Larry just wasn't physically able to do; but Larry brought intangibles that no one else has in our history. If you've got to pick one, I'd pick Penny because his skills were at a level that no one else has had here.

Penny better overall player...Finch maybe the best shooter Memphis ever had...Mike Butler was awesome on some not so good teams...Dexter Reed would clean up in todays game...wish they all could come back

RE: Would you rank Penny over Finch?
Stats from 3 players' last year at Memphis
Player.................Reb..........Points
Keith Lee............10.4.........19.7 (.8 APG)
Penny Hardaway....7.7.........20.0 (5.9 APG)
Win Wilfong........12.4..........21.0 (No assist stats available)

While it's very difficult/impossible to compare different eras, I'm not sure how any top 10 list can leave Win off.

...just one fan's opinion.
