RE: Hey Blue Crew!
Students are cry babies. They should pack their sections and then scream for more seats, which they would then get. I sat behind the visitors goal at the Coliseum. I made it to most games and had a great time. Sometimes spending all day outside the coliseum just to make sure I got in. I pay for my "way up there" seats and would also be happy to switch with the poor little college students who just don't have the time…the money…wah wah wah. Show up or shut up.

Was that too mean? And ditto on the non-traditional student, I went back during the Pyramid days and got a degree, worked, took care of my family and made it to most games. I guess its just whether you care or not.

If you are complaining about your free student seats then you really just don't want to go.

I was in the same boat - school during the week and work on nights and weekends. I normally made it to games 3 or 4 times a season but I had to make a special effort. I really wish I could have made it to more games as a student.

I waited tables during my time at Memphis State in the early 90's. I would hand the scheduling manager a copy of the tiger's basketball schedule and told him that if he scheduled me on those days I would not show up. He laughed, but scheduled me off. I understand if students do not have the flexibility that I had in college, but we are talking a total 18 (or so) days a year. If it is important, they can find the time.

We got what? 23,000 students? Do all but 50-60 have jobs that get in the way of the basketball game? It's funny how they always seem to get off work or don't have to study when we play UL or UT.

We sure don't agree often; but given how much money you spend; I can fully understand you going on a bit of crusade.

It is a lot easier for a student to get to a game at Duke than it is for a student to get to a game at the Forum...Let's be honest and say that the UofM basketball team is Memphis' team not the Universities team.

There were shuttles to FB games, I'm sure they could do the same for bball.

The administration needs to find out WHY student attendance is poor and then setup programs to rectify the situation. Our interim president seems to have a good track record already with FB.

The Tomb of Doom was great, but I remember the students at the end zones of the Coliseum as being really loud and rowdy.

Back in my day, we even had to sneak our own booze in!

students get free tickets
you get what you pay for

if the student CAN afford them by all means buy them
but your post suggests that the students deserve the best seats in the house which simply isn't true
(incidentally most students who actually BOTHER to go to the games sit on their hands quite a bit too)

But the premise of this entire thread is about the apathy of the students. Students SHOULD get free tickets because they're students and they pay their tuition/athletic fees (or whatever they're called now). If you stick them in the worst seats in the house, don't then decry their disinterest in the games.

It's a trade-off: either the University can make more money by selling the good seats to the older, quieter, wealthier fans and have a gameday atmosphere like UNC or UTK, or they can give the louder, rowdier fans (the students) those seats and have a better atmosphere like Duke and New Mexico.

Oh, wait! The worst seats in the house? I sit ABOVE the students' seats, in the nosebleeds, where I actually use binoculars to see the players, and I pay dearly for my seats, $500+. I would LOVE to get a crack at BUYING those students' seats. I would show up for EVERY game, stand up, yell loud, be rowdy, just as I do NOW, and have an absolute blast. I pity those poor students who choose to miss the best times of their college careers. And I don't want to hear all the ridiculous excuses for their non-attendance which have been debated ad nauseum on here for years, none of which carry ANY water.

We can sit here all day, but fact of the matter is our students suck and just don't care. If they cared, they'd be there every game regardless of where they sit or who we are playing.

I was a student once, and I went to games. Still, there weren't a ton of students even then. It's up to the admin to effectuate a culture change.

As for seeing the Tigers play for free, you don't know what you've got til it's gone. Most of the students don't realize what an awesome thing it is getting free tickets until they've graduated and are paying their own bills. That's why they're dumb college students.

And to this point.... i attended college at MTSU and so didn't attend many Tiger's games during my "college years." but I am now a non-traditional student at UofM (31 y/o with a family) taking night classes to continue my education and I've only missed one home game this year and have a friend or family member with a guest ticket by my side at each game.

It's a priority thing. It just isn't a huge priority for an 19 y/o to drive downtown for the games.

All this being said, I understand there was a significant line in freezing weather when the ticket office opened in the HofF when the guest tickets went on sale to the students for the Spring semester games. So i expect a good showing tonight and, at least, the last few regular season home games.

You are an excellent example of someone motivated to go to the games. I can also bet you that many of these same college students are darn-well motivated to drive downtown every weekend to party on
Beale, the Core, or South Main.

I also work, during the day and sometimes at night and on weekends, but it doesn't stop me from going to nearly every game. These modern-day kids are wussies. I get tired of looking down on all the empty seats reserved each game for them.

Right on. And don't even bring up the money deal. I can show any of the little crybabies how to go to the game, park FREE, and ride in a carpool for about $2 each, like I did back in the day, and like I continue to do today (minus the carpool.) Nobody says you have to drink expensive beer to enjoy the game. NO money excuse at all!

So, how do all these students get to their JOBS, if it's that hard just to get a few miles downtown????? 03-hissyfit
Sure doesn't stop them from going down to Beale on weekends. 03-drunk
