I don't buy for one second that ANY teenager lacks information about contraception and safe sex today. If you're poor and your parents don't have high school diplomas, you're far more likely to get pregnant as a teenager than if you're from a wealthy family with college educated parents. That is a fact, and while it doesn't excuse a single person for being pregnant, it's an issue that needs to be dealt with. Why? Because those kids are far more likely to cause us as taxpayers lots of money, and are likely to just perpetuate the problem. Similarly, I support state funded contraceptives not because I like the idea of paying for some teenager to get off or encourage underaged sex, but because I like the idea of paying for the resulting pregnancy, childbirth, and 12 years of school for a child that is statistically unlikely to get out of that cycle that much less. The last thing I want is someone to have a kid simply because they're too stupid to want to buy a condom, regardless of the fact it's completely their own fault, because I firmly believe we as a state should provide the public services we do for all children lest we unfairly punish the children for their parents stupidity.

And for the record, you'd be surprised the vast difference of the amount of sexual information and services in many different areas of the country. Just look at the different amounts of Planned Parenthoods by state, in much of the southeast, there aren't many options for sexually active teenagers compared to where you might live.

If you grow up a bastard child?..the chances are very high you will have a bastard child. I don't dispute that poor people have more children out of wedlock...I just don't buy for a second that lack of information or resources has as much to do with it as lack of parenting. We have ourselves generational cycle of poor behavior on our hands. Condoms are free at the health department. My wife hands out hundreds every week there. The public services are already available for anyone that seeks them. Teen pregnancy prevention programs are in every damn school. The media has been talking about this problem for decades with little positive results. The problem is...many of these girls WANT a baby and family members celebrate the pregnancy. Something is wrong here.

Not only that, there's no good reason for a 13 year-old to be sexually active. Pregnancy is typically more difficult for teenage girls, and no 13 year-old boy is capable of paying child support on his own.

According to HHS, in the original study that explored the effectiveness of the Making A Difference program, the participants were African-Americans, aged 11-13.

Nevertheless, Ellis thinks the curriculum should change.

“This has nothing to do with abstinence or sexual reproduction, actually, a lot of these things,” he said. “I would like to see that this particular portion of the curriculum is removed from the school."

Wow. A Christian fundamentalist from Kansas is upset because there is a poster about sex that is seen by sexually active 13 year olds. If he wants his sexually active kids to only learn about abstinence, he should put them in a private religious school.

right. because dirty books should only be given to children at taxpayer expense.

Nobody is saying dirty books should be given to them. But given that in a year or 2 after that age approx. 40% are having sex, probably tells you that teaching sex ed at the 13-14 age is probably the right time to do so(abstinence included in the discussion) so they know how to handle the situation when it comes up.

I have absolutely no problem with abstinence being pushed, and even the highlighted as the *BEST* option, but there also needs to be frank and mature discussion on every topic from masturbation to anal/oral sex. No information about a persons personal health and hygiene should be off limits because it's 'icky', and those who say otherwise need to grow up and think about what's really most important.

Do you even have any teenagers? The icky part is thoughts held by the teenagers themselves, and I'm all for letting them "grow up" in a manner that they are comfortable with, without the outside influence of the pedophiles in the school systems.
