It is sheer, unadulterated self interest. This is an adaptation now that the playoff era has arrived. Money conferences don't want a conference championship game because it makes it virtually impossible to put two teams into the playoff, irrespective of how good they are.

It's that simple. the sec could probably seat three teams in good years without a championship age.
