RE: McGee Era post mortem
Let me see...
I think he brought in some pretty good players, so I'd give him a passing grade for recruiting. I think he's a terrible game-day coach, and not a players' coach at all.
I thought he beat the drum for the program well enough, at least his first year.
I don't know how he interacted with the peons in the office, but I've heard some unflattering things. Like daddy said, "If a man is not nice to the waitress, he's not a nice man."
Bottom line, I'll echo Band Dad's metaphor with one of my own, "All sizzle, no steak."

I think I would like the new guy to have experience in hiring and managing a staff, because I think that is probably the most important skill needed. Even though the coach is the face of the program, lots of the day to day work and recruiting is done by the other coaches. The head coach is like the CEO, he can set direction, etc. but he can't everything. Hiring the right people and motivating them are very important.
Good point the lack of a defense is proof enough he could neither hire or manage his staff. I think his arrogance was another factor as well. I think his plan was to out score every one win a few games and bolt for a higher coaching position. It is probably for the best he left, so we can get back to rebuilding the program.

RE: McGee Era post mortem
McGee hired coaches he could get to do and think like him in every way possible. A bunch of "yes men" nobody to stand up when he's wrong or anything like that. Except for Brohm, Peterson, and Williams, all coaches that came from big time places and or played in the NFL JB/JW. You have to hire coaches who know more than you in some aspects in order to be well rounded and win. Not coaches who you can "school" and attempt to get them to believe you're the smartest coach in the world. Then when it's proven you don't know as much as you think you abandon the entire university and city of Birmingham. The coaches who were GA's have slim if any credibility to get another coaching job at this level, best of luck to them!!
