RE: Raucous Fans Return for Rockets
Only found three mistakes in The Blade's two articles on the Rockets.

1. Ryan said that Lauf fouled out.
2. Hack said there were only 100-200 empty seats.
3. Hack quoted Coach K as saying that Matt Smith is the team's only senior. (Not sure if that mistake is on Hack or K, but either way Hack should have realized it was wrong and not quoted it as if it were correct.)

I didn't sense a lot of energy in Savage last night despite the large crowd. Definately more than 200-300 empty seats.

From the broadcast, I didn't see the high energy level from a pretty good crowd.

Agree----nice crowd to be sure, but not all that "raucous". Of course except for that Alley Oop at the end there were not that many electrifying plays to get the crowd juiced up and for the most part the score was not so close that the crowd tension built up enough to become raucous.

For $3 what kind of passionate fans do you expect. There was an extra buzz from largeer crowd. Hope even half come back for mor winning in the future. Rockets were in control most of the game and didn't need a lot of extra help. Did like extra voices in TOL EDO cheers.

Agreed. Not much energy from the crowd between the open & end slams. The pace of the game, between the media to's and the endless foul calls, may not have helped. The special promo ($3 tickets as long as you bought 10 or more) helped; the usual ghost town up around me had a Cub Scout troop and a youth (3rd grade? 4th?) bball team...but many of those kids spent more time running back & forth to the concession stand than they did watching the game. Big thing I noticed overall is that the crowd in general didn't get into most "fan" things, like standing and clapping along with the fight song or even making much noise during the intro of the starting 5. It was a nice crowd. Hopefully some will make it back and become more than a casual fan.

I'm happy for the positive exposure for our team from the local media... not going to fact check each sentence.

Said Savage/Centennial seated 8,000. It was 8,900. Said Tim Reiser was the best PG ever at UT. Debatable.

RE: Raucous Fans Return for Rockets
Whoa. What's with all this negativity and nick-picking... we're 13-2 with the biggest crowd in since the University of Dayton game 5 years ago and we're bitching about the actual attendance and how (or how not) "into it" we really were.

We complain about the The Blade being unfairly critical at times. So today when The Blade writes a positive article we fans tear it apart word for word as unsubstantiated lies?!

It seems The Blade is trying to build interest and enthusiasm among the more casual Toledo sport fans. It's a good thing most of them don't read this forum.

Get a clue people.

Thank you. I couldn't agree more.

Yeah, I'm in complete agreement with you. I don't really get why some of these fans are looking for mistakes...? What's the point of that, it sounds like you're complaining. The Blade is showing us love, what we all want, and you're nick-picking each and every word it seems like. Were you guys English teachers or something?

RE: Raucous Fans Return for Rockets
1. If I were an English teacher, I would have complained about the punctuation. Are English teachers the only ones concerned about accuracy?
2. Isn't every sentence of a newspaper article supposed to be fact-checked?
3. No, I don't all of the sudden love The Blade just because there were a couple of positive articles about the Rockets.
4. I wasn't really looking for mistakes. I was reading the articles, and the mistakes jumped out at me.
5. I don't think I said that Ryan and Hack are liars. They were careless.
6. Rah, rah, go Rockets! Self-censor everything else. That will make for an interesting board.

On another topic, someone else questioned whether Reiser was really the best UT point guard ever. That was one comment that I did agree with, at least of the point guards I've seen. Did you have someone specific in mind? Thames may have been a better player or as good, but he wasn't really a classic point guard. More of an under-sized 2. (But with hops like that, his height didn't really matter, did it?)

Tim Reiser is, was, always will be the best. If you saw him play there is no doubt. Faster, better ball handler, passer, he could shoot very well but he cared more about winning and that meant assisting and playing the position like Coach Nichols wanted it played. Just my opinion.

The best was Reiser schooling the Illini's Tucker and Derek Harper.

RE: Raucous Fans Return for Rockets
I must admit that recently UT MBB crowds have been considerably passive until things get tight. This is the first year in 6 that we have not been out of most games in the first 10 minutes of the game. We really don't have crowds that are crazy from the start. Part of it is due to the limited student seats but the other is that most of the lower bowl seats are mid to older adults (self included) who tend to be more cerebral about their viewing of the games. Never the less, the CMU game was one of the bigger crowds we have seen in 6+ years. Great to see the east upper deck filling up with the $6 tickets...lets keep this going and make Savage a true home court from hell for visitors. Go Rockets!

It sure looked like the students sat on there asses again. Being Raucous starts with them. But until they get off there butts, that atmosphere won't be that crazy.

RE: Raucous Fans Return for Rockets
I gotta say reiser was the best of my time. he was an unreal passer. to watch him up close as a kid was amazing. now, I will say jay lehman can make a case as being the most effective pg, because he played on great teams, was expert at running the offense, not turning the ball over, and setting up shots. still, reiser had a brilliance I haven't seen since. I think juice is probably third. he hasn't peaked yet but is getting more consistently strong and could move up the list w a great senior year. the knock on reiser was sorta that he didn't ever become the great overall player that his talent made many think he would be. he was a good player who could make great plays w the dribble or pass and did those classic pg things like get his man out of position w the dribble draw help and drop the dime.

This is going back a few years, but John Rudley circa 1967, has to be included in discussion of best point guards.

I was lucky enough to see Rudley. He was not flashy and as unselfish as they came but for all the star power on that team, they would not have had the success they did without him.
