Better talent wins football games more often than better coaches. I'd rather spend resources on facility upgrades to attract talent than coaches who will eventually leave unless your Ohio U and have Frank Solich.
NIU would not be attracting the talent it is without previous success and that success was at least in part to an upgrade in sports facilities.
The Athletic & Convocation Center, The Yordon Center and the IPF are what gets recruits attention

Was Southern Mississippi cheap too?
And Temple, Memphis, and South Florida...
Don't forget UConn and those millions SMU has spent on football coaching salaries haven't worked out for them either.

Miami was a college when Florida belonged to Spain.
Would Spain be interested in buying it back, would be a good way to pay some bills.

From one of the UMass beat writers, Matty V. http://www.gazettenet.com/home/10204945-...ball-coach
"Whipple, 56 signed a five-year contract with a base salary of $250,000. Further contract details including incentives will be released at a later date"
I thought it was going to be more. Probably end up being around they same as Charley was making after incentives, somewhere near $500,000.

If I am not mistaken, this would make him the lowest paid coach in all of FBS. Sure doesn't seem like UMass is going to be jetting off to a bigger, more costly conference anytime soon...

Most of the time the salaries are kept low to keep professors happy, but are rich with easy incentives as doing the coach's show and perks from booster clubs as a free car, etc.
Hope we can continue to benefit the MAC as giving CMU a bowl bid in 2012 and Ohio in 2013 with a easy extra win playing us and a boost in RPI this year with Basketball. From talking and seeing post think this was a move that we were prepared to be comfortable with for a long time. But most would prefer an east coast facing conference.

RE: MAC falling farther behind in coaching salaries.
UMass paying fbs coach significantly < than JMU paying fcs coach?
Withers paid $325,000 base and a 1A adjustment clause.
Is this true, UMass paying Whipple $250,000 as a current fbs program?
WTF?

The incentives will be nice I am sure. Plus, he's kind of doing us a favor by coming back for less money he could make somewhere else.

RE: MAC falling farther behind in coaching salaries.
former Ohio WR coach Derek Mason was just named the new HC at Vanderbilt and he's adding 3 current Ohio coaches to his staff. Gerry Gdowski (Assistant Head Coach/Co-Offensive Coordinator/QBs), Keven Lightner (OL) and Jason Grooms (Asst AD of FB Ops) have been with Solich since he came to Ohio 9 seasons ago. Does anybody know if they pay coaches more in the SEC compared to the MAC? (jk)
Biggest shake up of Frank's tenure, nervous about the change but maybe its what's needed to get Ohio over the hump.

That's a huge move up. Not only going to an SEC school but a winning SEC program.

I hope Mason keeps up Franklin's success like Shaw has at Stanford, where Mason was hired from. He's probably as qualified as anyone for that job because of that experience, but his national connections should help him recruit across the country for academically qualified athletes.
