If you responding to my post, I have to say I have a great respect for ECU's program in football and baseball.

Sorry, total typo. I meant UFC. I was actually adding my thoughts to Dr. Isaly von Yinzer's post. I have a lot of respect for y'all too.

RE: How interested are you in college basketball?
From my experience its College football country in the Southeast but College Basketball country in the Northeast.

I'm from the Northeast and there was never much conversation about college football but college basketball was a big deal. I could remember watching Temple at my grandpas house in the 80's, telling me the only thing good about Temple was their basketball team. The Big East and A10 type teams are well known and followed.

A lot of professional women in the Southeast are hard core into college sports which I think is weird. Sport choices are very class centric in the South whereas in the North its more based on what you played in HS. College sports are viewed as a cut above professional sports in the South because public universities carry a lot of prestige in the South.

I think the best way to follow sports is from a national perspective. I can understand the alumni thing wanting to follow a school that was an important part of your life. With the pros I think its more fun to follow things league wide which I did when I more time for it.

Yeah, one of my best friends has one of the most incongruent lineup of sports interests: loves the UFC and NASCAR (and note that he has never lived anywhere close to NASCAR country), but is also obsessed with the English Premier League along with the NFL and MLB. Yet, he has absolutely zero interest in college sports. It's like speaking in another language with him sometimes.

10 for football

7-8 for hoops, ECUs improvement has gotten me more interested and I still dig the NCAAs and Conference Tourneys in March.

Americans into European Soccer is a new thing over the last 10 years or so. Of course TV contracts play a part of that and what made the premier league.

For me:
Regular season CBB= 6
NCAA tournement = 9

0 and/or negative numbers. I do not like college basketball at all.

Oh, the soccer is perfectly reasonable. To be sure, my friend has been a lifelong soccer guy (long before it was fashionable). I enjoy watching top level soccer myself and it's not that unusual in Chicago. The NASCAR thing came out of nowhere, though. He used to make fun of it and then he suddenly got hooked. Despite Chicago having an annual NASCAR race that's kinda/sorta close, this is a NASCAR market only in the sense that Miami is an NHL market (meaning in name only). My guess is that someone that's a fan of UFC/NASCAR/Premier League is pretty hard to find (especially in Chicago). I'm a pretty mainstream Northern sports fan by comparison.

Probably by accident, like me becoming somewhat of a hockey fan.

I got interested in hockey after having to watch it being stuck at a slow fire station one year with a Captain who was from NOVA originally and was a die-hard Caps fan. ESPN had the NHL contract at the time and if hockey was on that's what we watched. True to form instead of becoming a Caps fan I became a Flyers fan because the old man hated the Flyers with a passion.05-stirthepot

He didn't hate me too much for it. After I got promoted to Captain he and I would work shift swaps, me for Clemson games or for high school games when I was volunteer coaching, him for trips to Raleigh and/or Atlanta to watch his Caps.

RE: How interested are you in college basketball?
It's difficult for me top assign numerical rankings to quantify my interest in a particular sport. I can have at least passing interest in just about any sport, given the right circumstance. I NEVER watch tennis intentionally, for example, but I was hypnotized by a particular match last year that went to a lengthy tiebreaker. Of course, I wouldn't have watched the whole thing, but couldn't look away when the drama of the moment was highest. Something about the competition, I suppose.

My top three are easy though. I was raised on baseball, learned basic math skills from the old newspaper box scores and saw many of the old greats in person during the sixties. My family used to vacation in Florida just to be able to go to spring training games and my wife and I still ask each other what time the game starts on TV each night. I got my love of college football from my father at a very early age and it's rarely waned. I'm so into college football that I have been known to scour recruiting websites (and CSNBBS 04-rock) even though I am way too busy at work. As much as I love MLB and college football, I am equally passionate about the NFL -- modern day gladiators, the best of the best. I am an admin of a New Orleans Saints fan site with 25,000 members and follow the NFL draft like a Hollywood starlet stalker.

On the next level, my interest often depends on how well my favorite teams are doing; they don't have to be winning big, just improving will pique my interest. It's extremely rare for me to watch an entire game from this group, but it will happen from time to time. In order, my preferences within this group are college baseball, the NHL, college basketball and the NBA. Honestly speaking however, if I missed the whole season of any of them and only caught a few minutes of their playoffs, I wouldn't feel cheated. The college baseball playoffs and the NHL playoffs are pretty exciting and I try not to miss them, but I will only watch the basketball playoffs if there is someone playing that gives me a rooting interest.

I have zero interest in NASCAR, soccer, MMA, golf, etc. I'd rather watch 10-year-olds play soccer in person than any pro teams or world cup soccer.

I have to add that I do have a passion for college wrestling. I have watched it on the Big10 network, but after Redzone is gone, I cancel my subscription to the sports multichannel from my satellite provider, which takes that away.

RE: How interested are you in college basketball?
Regular season - 1. No interest really. I've watched 10 minutes so far this year.

Conference tournament - 2. Still pretty meaningless.

NCAA - 5. I'll keep track of my teams. Once they lose, I'll watch some of the final four.

I enjoy a bad Sunbelt football game more than a basketball game involving an alma mater.

@ESPNResearch:Through first 2 months of men's college basketball, games on ESPN averaging 1.37MM viewers per minute, up 25% vs last year

Can't say this surprises me that much. Seems like this year has been a lot better than in the past for some reason.
