Andre Reed and his 4...i mean 3...i mean 2...i mean 1...i mean 0 super bowls made it this go around! I know WR is a sexier position than DE and it's easier to measure their impact statistically, but c'mon!

Charles has to make it one of these days, and I hope it won't have to be on the old timer's ballot.

Its a shame so many writers are still holding a grudge against him. He was an excellent player and players on both the Cowboys and 49ers will tell you how much he deserves to be in the HOF.

I'm a diehard bills fan and I still can't get behind reed over Haley. But then again, I don't understand brooks or Williams over Haley either.

Not sure Haley will ever get it. Merit isn't enough, apparently.

Andre Reed? Really? He's only been retired for 14 years. Did something happen that suddenly his "accomplishments" are put in a better light? Wow!

The way I see it, football is suppose to be a team sport, therefore, I believe there is a great deal of merit to riding the bench on an undefeated team. Therefore, when you have a superstar athlete on numerous championship teams, this athlete trumps all others.

My thoughts make it difficult for the "Barry Sanders" of the world, but doesn't change my mind. Winning, with standards (aka Reggie White, Kurt Warner etc.), trumps all. Well, maybe Sir Charles wasn't "The Minister of Defense", none the less, he was a winner.

I would still put Greene ahead of Haley. The numbers aren't even close. Length of career, games played, tackles, sacks, consistency. Haley deserves it one day, but others still are ahead on the list.

They dont have as many advanced stats like they do for baseball and basketball to make this more of a science but as far as the great during the time he played, Haley seems to belong. Although I was surprised to see he didn't make the all decade team whatever that is.

I wonder if all the X -rated stuff is hurting him somehow, seems like it

Of course the X-rated stuff is hurting Haley in his quest for the Hall. He is a horrible piece of crap as a person. Someone should ask the Duke Club how much Charles has donated ($0). Sportswriters (voters)always know the truth. Screw him

Bruce Smith has about 27 DUI's. He's not exactly a role model either. He should be in based on merit.

Haley received a medical diagnosis of bipolar disorder. He currently receives medication and therapy to help him deal with it. There is no cure.

This is a bit personal for me. I have a family member who is also bipolar. This person is on and off their medications. When off they can function at a high, near-normal level for weeks- even months- holding down a job, doing all the usual stuff. Then they can become withdrawn, similar to depression, or act at an almost cartoonishly high level, almost as though they were on speed. THis can last for days or weeks, then they change. When my family member is in his down state, it can be very much like a fugue, he does not recognize or talk to anyone in the family. He resists entreaties to take medication or seek assistance. The up states can seem manic. In either case his judgment is so impaired as to be almost nonexistant. When on the medications, the change states occur less frequently and can be moderated, but they do not completely prevent it or stop it. Again, there is no cure.

I can completely believe Haley functioned at the level he did as a professional athlete and also suffered with bipolar disorder. What "sportswriters" look at as annoying personality traits almost certainly, to me, stem from a mental illness that is very poorly understood. I can only hope that when voting on his career moves to the Veterans' Committee, that these stupid grudges are forgotten and that, as well, this illness is better understood and the basis for his off-the-field actions is taken into account and his onfield performance is rewarded.

And as an aside, if I was going to make a list of qualifications for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the fact that the player had contributed to the Duke Club would be pretty low on the list.

The ups and downs with bipolar can be hard to deal with if you do not know how to handle it. I know of two people with this disorder, both can become rather harsh and viscous. Like you have stated, they can be very happy and giddy and then go into a depressive state. I can concur that good judgement isn't always there.

I actually heard the interview coming home from Drexel. I would say that the word apology is a little strong, but he was definitely contrite. Seemed at peace with the fact that it is either going to happen or it isn't. I think if he came out and just said look I did a lot of stupid things off the field which I now regret, but judge me for what I did on the field he gets in the next vote. Just not sure that happens, though I think he eventually gets in no matter what.

He stated , if I did anything to offend anyone I apologize. I was surprised to hear it myself. Kind of blamed his attitude on being from a small town and small school. I met him , I thought he was cool. But I don't know .

I don't buy all that bipolar stuff about Haley. Go read the books about the Dallas Cowboys in the 90's. There were some crazy characters on those teams (Irvin, Sanders, Smith, even Aikman.) Haley was just a bad teammate that they all hated. And yes, when you get a free education from a great school and earn $25 million and do not give a dime back- that indeed makes you a POS.

Always funny to me how people without money are always telling people with money what they should do with it. Get over yourself.

Tight wad, maybe. Not enogh appreciation for what he was given, maybe. But, harsh words like POS, no way. I still get a kick out of letting Tech fans know they haven't had a player accomplish as much as a JMU player. Therefore, I am still receiving benefits from Haley.

I've had staff of JMU tell me that Haley still keeps in touch with the school. Hate to bring Clark into this discussion, but I've been told that he is rarely heard from and we aren't calling him a POS.

I'm not trying to ride a high horse, but unless you have a close relationship with someone, be careful to judge.
