Just want to get everyone's thoughts here on where you would put McGee on the all-time UAB HC list.

I'll say...

1. Hilyer
2. Brown
3. Callaway
4. McGee

That would be my ranking as well. I would put McGee at the bottom of the list, simply because he is the only one who ever quit on the team after failing.

Indeed. When we had Brown we were longing for the days of Hilyer. When we had Callaway, Brown didn't look so bad. And with McGee, I think many actually missed Callaway as sad as that is.

Same. Even though Hilyer and Brown are 1A, 1B.

No, but he didn't burn the place down on his way out, like Watson.

I'm going to reserve that judgement until I see how things end up on signing day and who is still here when we are starting up fall camp.

I don't think you can blame Brown for what happened after he left. Half the team transferred to Samford to be with the coach they wanted us to hire. Then Callaway came in and ran the other half off. A lot of talented players left after Brown was gone.

I don't blame Watson for what happened after he left. I blame him for what happened before he left and while he was leaving.

If we'd straight up fired his ass at the end of '05, there's no telling how much better off we'd be right now.

Ironically, UAB has had another coach that left a head coaching job after two years for a lesser job. Not the same thing, but think about that before we say McGee quit.

1. Hilyer
-The other 3 had separate-but-equal failures

In lieu of all that's happened with this program, I'll have to adopt this ranking, too. This doesn't bode well for #5.

I don't really know enough about Hilyer, but even if he was my father I don't know that I could compare him with the other three since they coached in FBS. Callaway did everything but win. I'm very tempted to put McGee in the same circle of hell as Brown simply because he just walked away from the players, but McGee also didn't take time to toss a lit match over his shoulder as he left. Brown didn't just leave the house burning down, he lit the fire long before he left and was dancing around it like a mad man until the fire department finally chased him off.

Brown
McGee
Callaway

Hilyer doesn't belong on the same list with the D-1 coaches, in my opinion.

Watson Brown had some success at UAB, while the other two coaches did not. I rank McGee above Callaway because McGee actually injected some enthusiasm into the program that we never had under Callaway.

In his last 3 years, Callaway was 7-2 against USM, Memphis and Troy.

At least he knew who we wanted to beat the most.
