It's relatively difficult for power conference schools located in major league cities with NBA teams. Last year:

St. John's 7330
UCLA 9549
USC 4242
Northwestern 6389 15 miles from Chicago
DePaul 7681
Temple 5917
Oklahoma 9890 20 miles from Okla City
Villanova 8022
Arizona St 6143 10 miles to Phoenix
Charlotte 6093
Boston College 4244
Georgia Tech 7365
Miami 5814
Washington 7937
Cal 8297 5 miles to Oakland

Schools like Memphis, Marquette and Minnesota who draw 12-16K per game in NBA cities are very rare.

Until this year, Houston was playing minor league college basketball in a major league NBA city. And we were playing it badly. Give us some time. But know our ceiling is going to be about 6000 a game give or take.

If Houston makes the top 4 of AAC, will they go dancing?

Nope. Our nonconference was so easy and our nonconference record was so bad that we have to win the conference to make the NCAA

And Georgia Tech drew 7300 in a beautiful new $45M arena in the ACC. Very very hard in the South.

What? But remember this is AAC not CUSA anymore. The league is a quality league.

I just noticed that there are only four southern city schools in the Top 100 in attendance and only Memphis is in the Top 50.

I understand. But even if we finish 13-5 in conference, our projected RPI is 85. See RPI forecast.

Rpiforecast.com. Predicts the season based on Sagarin and figures what the RPI would be.

Houston's current RPI is something like 180 something.

That shouldn't surprise anyone...as the Big Ten has lead the nation in basketball attendance for 37 (or is it 38?) straight years.

Some outliers like Syracuse, Kentucky in Louisville will always be out there (UL is now in the same conf as Cuse so that will help the ACC's overall numbers) but the Big Ten overall is KING and has always been KING in hoop attendance...as their fans come out win, place or show (or sun, rain, snow).

Still not an excuse to have 200 fans in the arena on game day.

Depends....if that's the norm...then excuses aren't needed (i.e. crowd reflects their true support, it is what it is).

All I can tell you is that I never here anyone talking college basketball on the train or in a store. You can build a nice arena and put a winning product on the court but for a southern city school 6k to 7k is going to be your ceiling. If not marketed properly it's going to be half that.

Except for Penn State.
