that was an odd piece from dodd, IMO. i've never noticed him hating on the b1g. over the years, i've noticed doyel's columns are much more caustic.

Being critical of the Big Ten plays extremely well on the CBS site. They'll only go so far when it comes to the SEC.

Dodd loves to be critical of Michigan in particular. Sometimes Doyel makes me laugh with his style of bashing.

I think the "Paternonistas" are fine. It's all one way in the media. Someone is completely good or completely bad. They want the good remembered and honored and that's fine whether people agree with that or not. I don't see what they have done besides take an unpopular side.

The narrative is being established:

USA Today: For Penn State right now, James Franklin is wrong choice

On the other hand if they go out and get the purest of the pure he may not have the internal fortitude to stand up to the old regime.

"Most fans" felt Joe earned the right to leave the position on his own terms. At best, you might have gotten a "cult member" back then to admit to needing more oversight and changes with assistants and other coaches, but St. Joe was untouchable. Even after the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

I'm still waiting for some story that challenges his "intestinal bug" thing. And the fact that fans didn't go ape-**** over that, yeah, I'm calling out that observation of yours. "Most fans" felt the guy and his post were sacrosanct. They were utterly blind to reality. Still are, sadly.

Hindsight being 20-20…it looks pretty stupid but there were a few factors involved in that. Many, not all, but many fans were not sad to see him go. He was good but not great they thought. Also there was the Debbie Yow factor. She named him head coach in waiting. Terps fans hated her and so projected some of this onto him. Having said that…man I wish we could go back in time and have another chance.

I say false, bitter Pitter fan.

Most PSU fans believed that Paterno stayed on a decade too long. He established PSU's legacy and did things the right way academically for student-athletes (let's not bicker about the scandal…that's another topic)…but he really began tarnishing his legacy during his last decade…even BEFORE Sandusky blew up.

It's not a cult. But you can't pretend those 50 years with Paterno never happened and you can't call the man the devil. Even if you're a Pitt fan.

Joebots are very real and they are cult like.

IIRC, Franklin wasn't popular with the boosters and fans, most likely due to his backing Debbie Yow.

They were willing to match whatever Penn State offered, but it sounds like it came down to coaching at a legacy school and going back home, which is understandable. Vandy will pay as much or more for the right guy. The average SEC salary is $3 mil, and Vandy knows they have to be in the upper half to have a chance. Their facilities and athletes have come light years in the last 3 years due to Franklin's constant pushing and prodding. Stanford, Northwestern, heck... even Duke, have shown that the right coach can get an elite private school to the upper crust in football.

This, I highly doubt it came down to a money battle. The guy is from the State of Pennsylvania. Money isn't the only issue, especially when it can be matched.

I know it really burns some folks that seem to want to destroy the entire Penn State body instead of just surgically removing the cancerous tumors within it. Penn State has really done well for themselves in getting Bryant to save the ship and now landing Franklin to pilot it forward for what will probably be a long term in comparison to the going average these days.

He was already cleared. This is just some hack writer drumming up views. Yes, even USA Today does that.

I hope he won't change things too much. It will be challenging enough for UCF to go along with O'Briens's system in Scotland, but I saw what Vande did with UH.

Franklin at Penn State will probably end up hurting Maryland and Rutgers from a recruiting perspective.

Maryland and Rutgers will obviously thrive financially in the B1G. But competitively, I think they are in for a very long dry spell.

I don't think "winning football games" was ever near the top of Maryland's list of reasons to make the switch.
