Not sure if this was mentioned, but Rice vs. Miss. St. had a 2.7 rating in Houston, whereas Houston vs. Vanderbilt had a 2.6 rating in Houston. Looks like people in Houston and Texas prefer Rice!

"BBVA Compass Bowl (Houston-Vanderbilt): National 1.8 (2.5 million households); Houston 2.6; Dallas-Fort Worth 1.7; San Antonio 1.4; Austin 2.4.

Liberty Bowl (Rice-Mississippi State): National 1.7 (2.4 million households); Houston 2.7; Dallas-Fort Worth 2.5; San Antonio 1.8; Austin 4.0."

Do those ratings take into account how many households turned off the Liberty Bowl game at the end of the 1st half? J/K

Good numbers. A bit telling of Rice's recruiting footprint especially with regard to Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas Ft. Worth.

Yes! Fewer than turned off the BBVA Compass Bowl at the end of its first half. 24-0 Vandy with UH having 22 yards in total offense!

A better question might be how many turned each game off after the 3Q.

Liberty Bowl - All but the Owl diehards and masochists.
BBVA Compass Bowl - Not so many. 24 all to start the 4Q.

Yeah, the Compass Bowl was a dog before halftime, but the second half was something else. I was hopeful that UH would take Rice off the hook for the biggest blowout of the bowl season.

Were both games on the same channel (ESPN?). I can't recall now what channel the Compass Bowl was on. Rice's game was on a Tuesday afternoon whereas UH's game was a Saturday morning/afternoon - which normally would mean the UH game should get a better rating. But Dec. 31st isn't typically a big work day for most folks so that's probably a wash.

I was hoping the same thing about the Aggies immediately following the Liberty Bowl, but then JFF showed up for the 2nd half.

I really don't think that more people from Texas watching the Liberty Bowl was a good thing for Rice.

What's interesting is that BBVA Compass won nationally, but Rice won those Texas markets. That implies that the Compass had the structural advantages (e.g. larger pool of fans home to watch a game).

Of course, the numbers (1.8/1.7 National, 2.5/2.6 Houston) are so close that Houston is basically a push.
