I asked Rick Pitino tonight about the possibility of Bobby Petrino returning to UofL. His response, "I highly doubt that will happen."

Rick must not be paying attention to what's going on or this is a smoke screen.

Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris
Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi
Western Kentucky head coach Bobby Petrino

Bobby should go 10-2 in the inaugural ACC season, right out the gate! I do not doubt that this is very realistic...02-13-banana

Yeah, right. I'm sure that after trying to dick over Louisville for Auburn, then actually dicking over the Falcons for Arkansas BEFORE his screwing around on his wife with some young hussy, this time he has learned his lesson and the leopard will surely change his spots.

Whatever.

If you want to be a win at all costs operation, that's your choice. I get it, you are in the heart of SEC territory and they all cheat like hell so the temptation/expectation is that you too need to sell your soul to win.

It's just sad, that's all. It's very WVU-ish, IMHO. However, this is probably the price that must be paid in order to compete with the Auburns and Alabamas of the world.

I'm sorry, please tell me what NCAA infraction Petrino was charged with?

Petrino has spent most of his coaching career chasing the money. But who hasn't? He runs a clean program. Does more with less. And wins at a high level. I wish we hadn't had to fire him.

Honestly, they would be smart to do something to keep the South Florida relationships going...that's why I thought Butch Davis made sense.

The other upside to Petrino, even though it's a bit too cynical to be said publicly, is that you might have kind of the unique opportunity to hire a possibly top-10 caliber coach, but one that will not be moving on to greener pastures. That very baggage works to Louisville's advantage, as Petrino has already burned his bridges in the NFL and is probably a little too tainted for a top 10 program.

Narduzzi or Morris might be hotter right now, but for a program like Louisville in football, to get a quality coach AND a possible lifer has a lot of benefits.

Louisville football is kind of the same status as FSU basketball (with more support obviously). Not that Leonard Hamilton had Petrino type baggage, but he'd failed in the NBA and had pretty much aged out of being a real candidate for a top-ten program. But he's a hell of a coach, and while the build was slow and frustrating, the stability has paid off. You can try to be the 2nd tier program that hits on one up and comer after another and have them for 3-4 years before they move on, but eventually your luck is going to run out.

I'd still hire a Narduzzi or Morris or anyone else if I thought they gave a better chance to win, but if I honestly thought Petrino's prospects were at least even, that would be the tie-breaker for me.

A Clint Hurtt, Lamar Thomas-(who is on Petrino Staff at WKU) and Randy Shannon would be solid for Miami recruiting.

RE: UofL has a new Coach!
Petrino at Louisville is a game changer. We all know the man can coach, and Louisville is in a much better position now than it was when he was there the first time. The football stadium is larger. They are getting ready to make a lot more money. L'Ville is starting to get more brand recognition. The only reason I feel he hasn't won a championship is because he moved around too much. He went 41-9 in 4 years with L'Ville including winning the OB. He took Arkansas to the Sugar and Cotton Bowls in his 4 years there including their first top 5 finish in over 20+ years.

This transition of Louisville to the ACC needs to go well. I don't think Narduzzi is up to the task yet and I'd prefer Chad Morris to wait for Georgia Tech. Petrino is the man for the job.

This time around Petrino will indeed be in it for the long haul and that will be reflected in his contract.

His buyout will reportedly be astronomical. Hearing $15-$20 million.

Didn't pay attention to date but I think it was today from hurricane website that Shannon was listed as a Head Coach candidate at Louisville and a DC candidate at Oregon.

I should add that when I mentioned before how hiring him would bad for recruiting (compared to the other candidates), that was before Randy Shannon was also in the mix, along with Thomas (and of course Hurtt).

I am not one who was a flag-waver for Petrino. However he is the devil you know, and I understand why people wanted him because you know what type of results you will get. And with entering a new league, returning a pretty stacked roster, and not wanting to break in a new coach while entering a newer league, it makes perfect sense. I am not sold on him, or any coach as a long term answer though. A young assistant might use Louisville as a stepping stone to get somewhere else; an experienced coach has already proven he will use a school as a stepping stone to get somewhere else. So I don't worry about that.

However, I have to say that the one thing I do not like, is it does wreak of winning at all costs. Even if Petrino's problems were off the field and not NCAA or cheating the game related, it is a black eye no way to spin it. The only salvageable part is it is less of a "sin" to hire back the tainted coach then it is to hire a tainted coach with no prior connection to the school. But if you are going to have to chance it either way, PR hit or gamble on a coach, might as well chance it with the potential for best payoff.
