This could be a big deal. What's going on, Miner fans?

RE: UTEP gambling?
Just watched the new conference that started at 2:00 local time. Here is what was said. Coach Floyd found out that two players might have been involved in gambling. He immediately notified the athletic director and UTEP assistant to the president. UTEP notified the local authorities so they could begin their investigation. The two players were immediately suspended from the team. It was determined that the players did gamble. The NCAA penalty for gambling is a one year suspension. The two players were both juniors so they have been released from the team. During the investigation it was determined that a third player had also gambled and he has been dismissed from the team effective immediately. The players are McKenzie Moore, Jalen Ragland and Justin Grosgile. UTEP stressed that there is no indication that the players gambled on any UTEP sports. It was asked if the gambling took place during the team's time in the Bahamas and UTEP officials did not saying anything specific. While this really hurts our team this year I have gained a ton of respect for Coach Floyd for doing the right thing. The players are told they risk their eligibility if they gamble and these three did not pay attention to that warning. I hope this puts to rest the troubles the team has had and our fans come out and support a group of guys that will work their a$$ off for UTEP.

That sucks. At least you've got a good guy in Coach Floyd who tried to make things less terrible.

How long til Floyd gets the boot? The program has suffered too much embarrassment unrelated to basketball under him and the team has underperformed under him as well.

You kidding? He did everything right here. He could've swept it under the rug, but reported the allegations immediately, despite the consequences for the team. He should get an extension.

Tough situation, but Floyd handled it as best he could. Every program in the country is vulnerable to this type of situation. UTEP took fast action. Good for them.

None of our programs is immune from the actions of stupid kids. Sometimes it is all about how you handle it, and so far it looks like UTEP is doing the right thing. This may kill your year, but in the long run you will be glad you just got it behind you and moved forward. Good luck (but not tomorrow night 03-wink ).

Well I think this is ridiculous. People can bet LOTS of money on these college games, but a college athlete can't throw down $5 on roulette?

Did you know the same punishment could be handed down just for playing fantasy football. Even if you don't gamble, just playing for fun. It's pretty crazy if you ask me.

So, what happens when the players go on a losing streak and can't pay their bookies back?

Some of their rules are ridiculous, but I guess they have to draw a line somewhere. I ran a 15k race last March where one of the top overall females won a cash prize, but had to decline the award because she was on cross-country scholarship at a small college.
