Best bowl finance article ever.

Thoroughly explains how schools conference agreements are the reason why schools say they lose money on playing bowl games.
Think about it this way. Last year all the bottom feeders emu, akron, Miami oh benefited from us going to the orange bowl because of revenue sharing.

But we benefitted from them being in our conference.

RE: Best bowl finance article ever.
Long, but interesting read. I am curious on how the approx $17 million payout from NIU participating in the 2013 Orange Bowl game was actually distributed. I read articles that said that the MAC received about 8 million of this, of which NIU received 1.3 million, which resulted in NIU making about $250,000 profit after paying its various bowl expenses. Is there a paper or Web site that shows the actual final distribution numbers? Would it have been more profitable for NIU if Kent State went to the Orange Bowl instead of NIU, since NIU would not have incur the bowl expenses? Just talking from a real profit point of view; not from the intangibles (exposure, recruiting, etc) point of view.

RE: Best bowl finance article ever.
Does anyone exactly how the MAC shares its revenue with the schools? I have read everything from a straight split among members to a performance based tiered payout which provides bumps to schools for post season appearances, wins, etc. I knew there were rumors the MAC was looking into a GOR a while back but that has since gone quiet as I would guess some teams were hesitant to lock in.

Well, almost never.
The Silicon Valley and International Bowls folded right after NIU's appearances in those games.

The bowl system, like the olympics, is a complete scam. It's a shame.

And definitely not the bowl chairman. They all make 6 figure salaries. It's ridiculous. I think the Cotton Bowl chairman makes $400,000+. And most claim to be non-profit (or something like that)
