RE: Legit Question Here, Who is better Josh Pastner or Derek K ellogg?
I don't follow UMass that closely.
Year before Kellogg took the job they went 25-11 and made a run to the NIT semis.
Under Kellogg
2009 12-18 no postseason
2010 12-20 no postseason
2011 15-15 no postseason
2012 26-11 NIT semis
2013 21-12 NIT 1st round
2014 12-1 and ranked to date. No wins over ranked teams but a nice 8-1 record against the top 100 (or basically the type of accomplishments that Josh gets mocked for). The highest of those is #35 New Mexico. Lost to #50 Florida State.
The immediate prior year to Pastner was 33-4 with a Sweet 16 (we know the details and realize all 5 starters from that team did not return, nor did he add Henry or Cousins or Wall or a few others as originally expected- point is I have no idea of those nuances at UMass)
Pastner
2010 24-10 NIT second round
2011 25-10 NCAA Rd 64
2012 26-9 NCAA Rd 64
2013 31-5 NCAA Rd 32
2014 10-3 and ranked to date. 2-3 against the top 100, one of those two against OK State. Losses to 12 Florida, 16 OK State and 26 Cincy.
I get the idea here- and realize these sort of answers get brushed aside, especially in a bait thread following a Memphis loss- but, and we will see how this year plays out- Pastner seems to have done much better. Kellogg appears however to have UMass on track as they have improved each year with just one backslide year. Of course Pastner improved unquestionably every one of his first four years and all appearances seem to be this year will be even better- but of course we did indeed lose to Cincy- and let a mid 2d half tie game end up in an ugly final score.

Kellogg has never made the NCAA tournament playing in an inferior conference and Pastner has made 3 of them. Kellogg's teams have never been ranked to end the season and Pastner's have. Of course he is doing more with less; Homefry (again) has it right.

Better question is that since sean miller went to arizona the same year josh came here, who is in a better place now?
That doesn't really work though because miller had a few years as a coach before, but still. Remember people wanting miller to come here.

Miller is in a better place. Until Alford proves himself he should be able to lock down recruiting on the entire west coast; and his athletic program gets 12X the money ours does. If Miller would have come to Memphis, you grab him.
