This is a long, roundabout question, please bear with me...
I grew up in Memphis, born in 1963, moved away after graduating from CBC in 1985. During my high school years I attended a fair number of Memphis Rogues' home games, and I still fondly recall the music blasting prior to the game as the fans were filtering into the Liberty Bowl. Of course, I clearly remember the distinctive sound of Johnny Rivers' "Memphis, Tennessee" but not much else.
I never heard of the band Big Star while I lived in Memphis, was vaguely aware of the name Alex Chilton, but didn't know any of their/his music. Around 1987 I bought "Pleased to Meet Me" by The Replacements because I read a review in Rolling Stone that said the album was recorded in Memphis and included a song dedicated to Alex Chilton. As you likely know, the music of Big Star was a huge influence on The Replacements and many other power-pop bands. I became a huge Mats fan, and at some point in the 90s I bought Big Star's album "Third/Sister Lovers" when it was finally released. I thought it was as pretty good album, had some very good and some not so good songs on it ("Thank You Friends" is my personal fave). But for some reason, I never even considered getting any of Big Star's earlier stuff. This past summer I was listening to a Replacements radio station on Spotify, and it played "O My Soul" from Big Star's second album, "Radio City". I'd never heard the song before but I really connected with this song and was very surprised when I checked to see who the artist was and saw it was Big Star. This led me to purchase the excellent "#1 Record/Radio City" double release, which I've probably listened to a billion times now, and I have been amazed at the music this little known band from Memphis was making in the early 70s. And even more amazed that they did not have the success that they deserved (I've since seen the Big Star documentary "Nothing Can Hurt Me" and understand a bit better why it worked out that way).
So back to my question. Whenever I listen to "O My Soul" there's something about the jangly guitars and thumping bass that makes me think of the Rogues' pre-game music. Does anyone recall if this song was in the pre-game rotation, or am I somehow incorrectly connecting these two memories??
