RE: 2014 Football Outlook
I recently looked at some Hudl videos of a few our 2013 players and 2014 recruits. You can check them out by typing the player's name along with "hudl" into the google search field. The following are my observations of 2013/2014 recruits and how they may impact the program.
2013 Recruits - This is the class that is on campus, but due to redshirt/grayshirt was on the field for significant action.
1. Nate German (QB) - I hadn't seen his senior highlights nor all of his junior highlights. He is good. He has a good arm, makes all the throws, good pocket presence and awareness, and runs very well. If he is as good as rumored, I could see him legitimately being our next 4 year starter. I would be concerned about the shoulder injury, but German looks good.
2. Trey Martin (DL) - Currently, Trey Martin is listed as a Defensive Lineman. He played offense and defense at El Campo. However, I think that Martin should go back to the offensive line for two reasons. First, I had to watch Cole Hunt's defensive highlights (they were teammates at El Campo) just to see Martin's defensive work as Martin's highlights are practically all offensive. Second, when you see this kid run block...my goodness. He is filthy, strong, very quick when pulling, and boy does he finish blocks. This kid was giving out pancakes left and right. He is simply dominant as an offensive lineman. Hopefully, he will go back to offense in the Spring.
3. Cole Hunt (TE) - Cole showed good hands and good speed as a TE his senior year, but...he is a Defensive End. You can tell that he was absolutely a handful for anyone he lined up against. I know that he wants to play TE, but if he fills out and sells out to Defense, he will be a force in college and a certain draft pick at DE.
4. Brad Luvendar (DT) - I hadn't seen much of him, but I like him. He collapsed the pocket on a few occasions and was very disruptive. He is good enough that moving Martin back to offense would not be detrimental.
5. Parker Hanusa (DE) - Most of us are familiar with Womac and Schantz, but Hanusa is also going to be a good player for us. I don't know how many TFLs he had his Senior year, but he seemed to consistently be in the back field. This is another one that if he fills out, we are talking about a 6-4/260 defensive end his Junior/Senior year. Defensive End is vulnerable this year due to experience, but should be a position of strength in 2015 as we have good players there.
2014 Recruits - These are obviously the recruits we hope to sign in early February.
1. James Mayden (WR/S) - Okay, I don't know about 4.25 40 yard speed, but Mayden is fast. And I like him better on defense than offense. He had 43 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 4 or 5 forced fumbles. He has wonderful closing speed which on the highlights I saw put him into position to have had two other interceptions had he held onto the ball. He hits and wraps up well. He is a great pick up for us.
2. Brady Wright (DE) - Good speed of the edge. He would be an ideal linebacker if we employed a 3-4.
3. Emmanuel Ellerbee (LB) - His 40 yard time is listed as 4.8. Well, he looks faster than that to my eyes. There is no way he is that slow unless he is the most instinctual linebacker we've recruited since Cameron Nwosu. He was in the back field constantly and over all made life hellish for Qbs and Rbs. I don't know if the level of competition is a factor. I don't see why it should be. Ellerbee is a good pickup for us.
