Ugh -- that pep rally was terribly lame. If the word "rally" implies some degree of exhorted participation by the attendees, it was barely a rally at all. It consisted of an absolutely awful (and over-amplified) set of pop solos by a local announcer; nanosecond remarks by Coach Bailiff, Taylor McHargue (who was pretty clever), and a former State QB from the late 1980s (who was less so); and then alternating 1-2 minute performances by each school's band/cheerleaders in which the audience stood and watched while the bands played. There was virtually no cheering by the fans themselves. In Mississippi State's case, that is partly because they don't seem to have much in the way of school cheers or songs -- they seem to just ring those cowbells. (One of their excuses for a school cheer was "Who let the dogs out?" -- really?). In Rice's case, we have a few catchy songs (e.g. "Old Gray Bonnet") and cheers (e.g., the chant after the Fight Song), but, as we all know, our fans are psychologically incapable of actually vocalizing such things in public; instead, they just stared slack-jawed and clapped with breathless fear to be taking so much risk.
Almost from the moment the "pep rally" started we were counting down the painful minutes til it ended.

So, minus the cowbells, I'm going with, WE WON THE PEP RALLY!

The competitions are in this video.
Thanks for the link. Clearly we won the singing contest, and it looked like the eating contest too....guess they were trying to keep it even. Well, the 3 pt competition broke the tie, so we win!

That was one of the worst mashups ever, with the most poorly-amped speakers I've ever heard. That said, the whole experience was worth it for getting to see all the MSU fans' faces as the MOB suddenly started singing 'Stay' to them in a falsetto. Nobody ever expects that. It's great.

Yes indeed. And the band at the pre-game party the next day, while good, was also overly amplified. Perhaps everyone in Memphis is determined to prove that their amps go to 11?
