RE: JMU is scared to come up to FBS
This is written by a Chinese Religion Asst Professor that is butt hurt over freezes on faculty raises for a few years. It is by no means a reflection of how the JMU administration feels. I think a better indication that JMU's admin is now supportive of the move to FBS is the recent Carr Consulting report regarding a move to FBS, the FAQs released about the results of the study and benefits of FBS, and the recent HC hire of Everett Withers (Ohio State Asst HC & Co-DC).

That piece published by the asst professor is simply that, a piece (of ****).

FBS isn't for everyone.

This is just one faculty member. Faculty everywhere is opposed to football. Rutgers faculty have repeatedly voted to drop football.

2nd page of the article is good. 1st page is what disturbs me. When I read academics arguments these days they appeal solely to emotion and are liberal with the truth on factual items. There's a real degeneration of serious discussion in this country when even university scholars are incapable.

Over on the JMU boards we are having our own discussion on it.

http://csnbbs.com/thread-669650-page-6.html

Around page 6 the professor who wrote the article weighs in and it gets real interesting. He eventually says that 20 more scholarships for football will lead to an increase in sexual assault on campus 01-wingedeagle and gets very defensive and angry when people keep calling BS on his specialty of Chinese religion. Really is nothing short of hilarious.

lol. Now that's got to be a good read. Its always funny when the professors who rule their classes like Gods are placed in a position where their belief system can be can be easily questioned. The flailing about that results is often dumbfounding.

Statistically he may be right.

Its part of a discussion any school should have about football. It is not wrong to express an unpopular opinion-- just dangerous

It's basically the same opinion the majority of professors have a universities with D1 football teams and was a popular opinion from the non-sports fans on Slate. He's basically only experienced an echo chamber of popularity with his opinions on the subject before he was absolutely thrashed by many posters on our board.

Nothing dangerous about expressing an opinion...it might be dangerous to badmouth a huge project your employer is working on on a very popular internet site though. Something I wouldn't do.

I doubt many schools have taken a hard look at their athletic program and what is appropriate. With over 350 Division I programs now, I KNOW few schools have taken a hard look at their athletic program and what is appropriate.

RE: JMU is scared to come up to FBS
AState from 1990 (when we started transition) to around 1996 had zero business in FBS. The administration of the day saw it as a way to chase game guarantees in order to comply with new state laws regarding the financing of athletics. The NCAA had ruled that no I-AA games could count toward bowl eligibility so guarantees to I-AA were going away. At no point in that time period did AState play a single "I-A" season with more than a couple scholarships over the I-AA limit and several seasons didn't even award the I-AA limit in scholarships.

Things got better in 1997 as they started paying salaries more in line with similar I-A schools and started putting a little bit of money in facilities.

When the NCAA changed the I-A criteria in 2004 I asked an assistant AD at AState about them, he called them the "Save us from ourself" rules. That's when the school began to finally start getting more serious about the approach and then when we hired a new president things just exploded.

But they did a lot of damage to the brand by thinking that if they slapped some seats in the stadium and added women's golf but operated on the same budget as in I-AA without a stable conference that everything would just magically work out.
