maybe three times as much, once for each guy, once for the fact that we have co-OCs.

Every opportunity will be taken.

Not that it diminishes you in any way, not even slightly, but I think the answer is 2. The other would be Richard Chapman, who was also a first round draft choice of the Detroit Lions.

Are you sure there are no attorneys who fit the bill? After all, if an M.D. (a non-thesis, professional doctorate) counts, then surely a J.D. does as well.

Richard Chapman has a Ph.D. in Physics.

The J.D.'s that I know wouldn't fit all the criteria.

The Phi Beta Kappa is the hard part.

Jarett Dillard more than meets the bill above, except for the Phi Beta Kappa part.

Hard to imagine the offense being much worse than it has turned out under Edmondson/Lynch. This thread is a sad little reminder.

A nuclear physicist no less.

In deference to present company and our President, JDs count.

There are many outstanding former Owl players. Honestly, many much more distinguished than I.

I rigged the cohort group in my favor.

Mostly because it is a rare distinction, but also because nearly half the undergrads aren't even eligible for Phi Beta Kappa, which only includes "arts and sciences" majors -- no engineering, no architecture (not sure about music).
A typical Rice graduating class has roughly as many Tau Beta Pi members as it does Phi Beta Kappa members.

Still, l wouldn't put a JD in the same category as Dr Chapman.

Is this a new restriction? I was inducted into both Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi in 1976 with an Electrical Engineering major.

No it is not. There must be some reason you were eligible.

George, I believe engineering majors currently make up well under 40% of the graduating undergrad population, and the number not eligible for Phi Beta Kappa goes down even further when you factor in the number of "arts and sciences" double majors amongst engineering students.

RE: New OC for Owl football
As I recall, there were at least three engineering majors in my class at Will Rice that made PBK.
The page here says that
"Criteria include: 90 hours of liberal course work (laboratory, performance, and professional courses are disallowed)"

The criteria are elaborated on here.

It looks like all Math courses, undergraduate science courses that are not labs, and even some Engineering courses make the cut. Probably not that hard to get up to 90 hours of liberal course work.
