New offensive coordinator...
Is SIU OC Kalen DeBoer, per footballscoop.

Here's his bio:

SIU liked to sling the ball around. Had a productive offense under DeBoer. Seems like a good hire.

I'm glad coach Creighton is starting to fill out his staff. We've mentioned how his assistants needed to hopefully bring FBS recruiting experience and connections with them. This particular hire does not have any FBS coaching or recruiting experience.

I like the fact that he's a former successful HC...
"DeBoer was hired following the 2009 season after compiling a 67-3 (.957) record during five seasons as head coach at the University of Sioux Falls, where he led one of the most dominant programs in the nation. He guided USF to three National Championships and was a three-time NAIA National Coach of the Year. DeBoer won four Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships, 50-straight home games and 29-straight games overall in his last two seasons. That winning streak was the longest in the nation at any level in college football at the time. His teams won back-to-back NAIA National Championships in 2008 and 2009, and adding in his 2006 national championship, DeBoer had as many National Championships as games0 lost during his five-year tenure as USF's head coach."

Here's SIU's football website if you want to ask them question about him:

Be warned, though...they don't like him much.

Here is the 2013 schedule for S. Illinois. This schedule is pretty tough for a FCS school including Illinois, E. Illinois, Youngstown State, and N. Dakota State. SIU lost to Illinois by 8 and two very close loses to E. Illinois and Youngstown State.

I'm not sure I see much difference in S. Illinois and half of the MAC.

S. Illinois could beat 1/2 of the MAC. They play against FBS, recruit against FBS.

Agreed Steve this is almost akin to stealing an OC from another MAC school.

I like the hire.. Also, he has a proven track record for offensive scoring.. He can do the same thing at EMU just he will have more talented players in place.. I am getting excited already.. I am wondering what's happening on the defensive side of the ball, DL coach, DB coach, Special team etc...

Creighton seems to be taking his time and going after guys who are looking to make the step..

Lest anyone have doubts about S. Il. as a place for a coach on his way up, check Jerry Kill's resume.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Kill

Kill shows how a coach can come up from the type type of schools that our HC and OC have.

Disagree wholeheartedly. They are not worthy of the MAC. If they took the step up they could, but they and Illinois State won't because they enjoy their Missouri Valley Conf basketball affiliation. For football, they don't have enough scholarships to compete with the worst MAC team-FACT.

You guys should know better.

RE: New offensive coordinator...
The guy is similar to Creighton this guy has does have lots of coaching experience but like Creighton none of it is at the FBS level. Hopefully as he builds his staff he'll realize that he needs a staff with some Michigan recruiting connections and FBS recruiting experience. A quick look and it appears the recruiting area for Southern Illinois is Illinois, St Louis, Iowa with a dash of Kentucky and Southern Wisconsin. I like the fact that we hired a wide open offense minded guy I wonder if we have the personnel to execute such an offense?

Comparisons to the next Jerry Kill? Geez the exaggerations and comparisons and hype never seem to stop on this board.

Did you really just call yourself "sophisticated"? You wanted us to hire a high school coach.

Doesn't look like the offense was their problem.

That is your opinion.

FWIW, I use the Sagarin rankings (for most everything) and quite frankly schools like So. IL are ranked much higher than the bottom third of the MAC.

So. IL. is ranked much, much higher than EMU.

And if you think this Sagarin bit is a crock of s*it, look at the USA Today and look at the betting lines for the bowl games set by odds makers and predicted by the Sagarins. (The print edition has the betting odds and Sagarin lines for all 30 bowl games - a nice large sample of games covering over half of FBS teams).

Their correlation is very high.

Quite frankly the Sagarin computer algorithms easily beat almost all humans and, as I mentioned, correlate extremely high with professional odds makers who beat their livelihoods on setting good lines.

RE: New offensive coordinator...
For anyone who cares, here are the 2013 College FB Sagarins (these do not have the bowl games):

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sag...onference/

And one only needs to remember what a lot of FBS schools did the first weekend of the season, oh how the mighty fell:

N.Dakota State beat Kansas State which beat... (shhhh, can't mention that school on this forum) in a post-Christmas bowl game.

Towson roundly beat UConn and UConn never recovered from that defeat.

E. Washington beat Ore State.

E. IL soundly beat a bowl team, San Diego State.

And there were a lot of 'near misses'...

One more observation it does look like Creighton hired a guy who will be on the same page offensively as he was at Drake. That is a positive.

It be interesting to see how all this Div III, Div II and FCS experience translates on the FBS level and in recruiting.
