C.J. Washington didn't start for UAB today, but went for 17 and 10. Postgame quotes said his grandmother recently passed away
In the pregame it was mentioned that the policy is if you don't practice the day before the game you don't start. CJ had been away dealing with his grandmother's passing. No big deal - his not starting, I mean...

For a freshman, I'd take him in a Blazer uniform. Rucker almost broke an ankle guiding him one time.
If he guided him to the basket, I would hope so!

BTW, Rob's a good glue guy... Does a lot of things that don't reflect in the stat lines. Both he and Rucker play hard, hustle ball. I really enjoy watching those two. Heck, I enjoy watching this whole team... Though sometimes Frazier seems a bit too nonchalant. But all in all, these guys all hustle and give great effort. And when Mehinti gets more time under his belt and gets further along, this kid will be unbelievable.

Agreed. I believe Frazier plays at a couple different speeds. When he is leading a fast break, the guy can fly!

I really agree with this part. Frazier is so talented, but he just doesn't always seem to give maximum effort. In all seriousness, I believe the guy has a shot at making an NBA roster, but he just needs to play his hardest at all times, and he needs to learn to take care of the ball.
I'm with you on Rob and Rod. They just give maximum effort at all times. They aren't ever going to blow you away, but they are going to do a lot of things that help a team win games.
And Mehinti is quite a talent to me, just a little raw. I really wish we had given him some more substantial minutes in some of these games, because he is more than ready defensively. His offensive game needs some work, but for now that isn't a huge issue. I really think he is going to be a key part of this team for the next few years.

Speaking of effort, am I the only one who thought that CJ Washington looked like a man on fire when he got in the game?

To be fair, they were using their 5'4" point guard to guard him down low on occasion.

Well, and their tallest starter was 6'4".
Of course, subbing 5 at at a time made it kind of hard to keep up with.

Five at a time, and frequently. I've never seen so many substitutions in one game.

Yeah, that move where you circle the ball and then hold it low got the ball stolen several times, lol.

RE: Newberry
I was most impressed by our defensive effort. We were really active in the passing lanes. Steals were a HUGE missing piece for us. I hope the trend continues.
Washington looked like he did the first couple of games. I believe he's back healthy and feeling confident.
I don't recall a time in recent history where we should legitimately be favored in every single conference game. Southern Miss and La Tech have really come around in the past two weeks. The home games we have this year are going to be fantastic.

No- I've liked about everything I've seen of CJ Washington up to this point. Granted, I didn't see this game at all, but of the ones I've seen, CJ is a legitimate "above the rim" player. He gives maximal effort, plays for the rebounds, makes good moves down low. I also think he hit every free shot in the A A&M game, too. Impressive player all the way around.

I've never seen a 5'4" point guard before, but dude had 10 points, and was a one-man hornet's nest on D.
He was certainly fun to watch. He looked a bit bow legged & w/ those short legs & long pants made it a bit comical but you couldn't diss him on effort. The 5 man subs seemed to work very well letting each "team" play 2-3 min then play the other allowed them to stay fresh. We seem to be off to slow starts about every game/every half for about 10min each time then finally kick it in gear ???

It looked like a standard thing. There was no confusion, no "who, me?". The coach would wave in a group and they'd swap out with the team on the floor.
Mike Anderson used to do it a lot, although usually he'd swap out four at once, with Squeaky staying out there.

Mike Davis did it too...but it was normally against Memphis when all the starters were in the doghouse.

RE: Newberry
I used to love to watch CMA do it. He'd pull out the starters fairly late in the second half, let them get a breather, then at about 4 minutes to go four starters, rested and with fresher legs would go back in. Sometimes you could actually see the morale hit to the opposing team when they did.
