RE: What happened to the Metro conference?
It would have been interesting to see what the trio of Louisivlle, Memphis, and Cincinnati would have done if the SWC had stayed together and invited New Mexico, UTEP, Tulane, Tulsa, and USM.
Would they core 3 still have focused on basketball with Marquette, Depaul, St Louis, Charlotte, UAB, USF and piecemealed together a football conference out of available candidates ECU, Army, Navy, Northern Illinois, ULL, Arkansas St, La Tech, North Texas, and NMSU?
Or would they have given up and pursued SWC membership to make them an even 12 with one of those new fangled championship games.
Louisville, Memphis, Cincinnati, USM, Tulane, Houston
Tulsa, SMU, Rice, TCU, New Mexico, UTEP
It would have been interesting, but either result would have been "cleaner" that what actually occurred.
Also, irregardless what that trio decided, The WAC would have then been at 10 (Utah BYU, Colorado St, Wyoming, Air Force, UNLV, Fresno St, SDSU, SJSU, Hawaii) and would have been very stable. There would have been no scheduling issues, no MWC and the additions of Nevada and Boise could have happened naturally after they proved themselves in the Big West and so the WAC could cash in on the 12 team championship game.
