Aggies edge past Longhorns in Texas popularity contest.
Aggies edge past Longhorns in Texas popularity contest.

A recent survey by Public Policy Polling found 22 percent of Texas voters identified themselves as Aggies sports fans, compared with 20 percent who declared their loyalty for the Longhorns.

For pete's sake people, its a survey of 500 voters. Not exactly the best methodology.

Better one to compare UT vs A&M- Facebook pre-season top 25 county leaders:

That tells a much more statistically sound story than 500 random schmucks.

Yeah totally believable.01-wingedeagle

Lets see, Baylor is going from a 50K seat stadium to a 45K stadium. UH hasn't averaged 40K since the late 70's and capped capacity at 40K for their new stadium. Meanwhile, Tech has plans to expand to 70K in the very near future.

Let me know when either of those schools need a 60K seat stadium and then we can talk about popularity in the state of Texas. As it sits right now, Texas is 1st, A&M 2nd and Tech 3rd.

It isn't a troll thread and the number of self proclaimed fans has nothing to do with stadium size.

I'd say this really has most to do with the amount of perceived success each team etc has. Texas has fallen on harder times and has slipped while A&M has done much better and created excitement. The same can be said for Baylor and Houston relative to Tech.

RE: Aggies edge past Longhorns in Texas popularity contest.
We have lots of fans

UT has lots of fans.

The unaligned general public waxes and wanes as fortunes climb and fall. They supported A&M in the 80s/90s and the UT the last 15 years. Texans love having an SEC to root for now so it's not surprising our popularity is picking up again.

All one has to do is look at the TV ratings from this year.

Your data is wrong. It's missing this years Auburn Alabama game which was about a 9.2, the Auburn Texas A&M game which was solidly in the 8 range, and the Auburn Georgia game.

The fact that you chose to go back to 08 and 09 shows the utter decline of the Big 12 since losing 4 key schools.

Times have changed forever for the Big 12. 2008&9 stats are now irrelevant.

Like I said, Tech and UT need to get back to 08 & 09 levels and aggy will once again be 2nd or 3rd fiddle in the state of Texas. The TV ratings show that and once autograph leaves, the hype of the SEC will wear off. Texans still want to see local big Texas teams play each other. After a few years, the newness of a&m in the SEC will mean nothing to Texans.

Not according to the Houston Chronicle. The Bama-Auburn game drew a 6.6 in Houston. If you look at those ratings, Texas, Texas and Oklahoma still play in the Big 12. Nebraska, Colorado and Mizzou never had high TV ratings in Houston. In fact, until the 2010 season, A&M rarely high TV ratings unless they were playing Texas.

Edited to show the ratings for the Bama-Auburn game in Houston.

I was thinking the same thing, it's about to turn into a total scorched earth effort by the tech fan.

Quote:Next in line was the University of Houston (10 percent), followed by Baylor University (8 percent), Texas Tech University (5 percent), Texas Christian University (4 percent), University of Texas at El Paso (3 percent) and Southern Methodist University (2 percent).

UH, BU and TCU are more popular than that juggernaut from the Buddy Holly Plateau?. 03-lmfao

I jest, but it will be entertaining to say the least.

Need to grab the popcorn, this is going to get good!

RE: Aggies edge past Longhorns in Texas popularity contest.
Damn, the insecurity and defensive position by jml is already in full swing! Meaningless TV ratings and all!

Give me a minute please, I need to grab a beer and my popcorn only has 30 seconds to go.

Bama Auburn, Auburn A&M should both be on that list and they are not, even in Houston, which by the way has the largest contingent of Auburn Alumni outside of Alabama besides Atlanta.

Excellent post 10th! If nothing else it proves that the Big 12 spin doctors have a long way to go to put a Texas load of kittie litter on the data gathered by the pollsters and by your data listed above. If I could give you any more rep points I would.
