Herd Adds 1AA Rhode Island to 2014 OOC Schedule
I'm a little disappointed (nothing against RI, but not a fan of 1AA games), but according to a Rhode Island paper, Marshall has added the Rhode Island Rams to complete it's 2014 OOC football schedule. The game is scheduled on 9/27/13 in Huntington.

That completes our OOC schedule with the following games:
8/30/14 @Miami (O);
9/13/14 Ohio;
9/20/14 @Akron;
9/27/141 Rhode Island

Are they any good. Interesting opponent, never seen them play. Of rather play a I-AA then only have 5 home games.

They are turrible. They're usually any where between 0-11 to 3-8 consistently the bottom 3 of CAA our old conference. Their best record as far as i remember is 5-6. I have only been following them from 2009'ish after we had football.

Rhode Island is Georgia State's lone win in the last 2 seasons. The Panthers whooped them last year. Rhode Island is the 1 in Georgia State's 1-22.

That should say enough.

If we don't win 70-0 I'll be upset. So Ellis Johnson would have even beat them.

With that OOC schedule, I don't see Marshall cracking the Top 25 even undefeated. Overall I would rate Marshall's 2014 schedule about 105th most difficult. I know Louisville was a late change, but the schedule was already weak before that. Why no SB games? I would prefer a home and home with one of those schools over 3 MAC games.

B/C at the time all of our fans wanted regional OOC games we could drive to. When the schedule was made ECU was our closest school in CUSA. Just the way it worked out, nothing we can do but play ball.

Also, if we go undefeated we will finish in the top 15 with a BCS bowl...yes, with that schedule.

Yes you can. Good ol' wins and losses carry more weight for mid-majors than whom you play. Look at where some of the teams below were ranked and what Sagarin has for their SOS Ranking

Louisville (#18) Record: 11-1 SOS: #105
Fresno State (#20) Record: 11-1 SOS: #110
Northern Illinois (#23) Record: 12-1 SOS: #113

Northern Illinois has been overrated all season long. They'll of course fall after their loss to USU, but Bowling Green's another example. Prior to their loss to Pitt, they were 10-3 against a schedule ranked #124. They were ranked #21 by CBS, and were in the top 30 in most polls. UTSA by comparison went 7-5 against a schedule rated #85 this year.

Looking at stuff like this almost makes me wish UTSA didn't have such a grueling schedule lined up not only next season, but already many years in advance. We have Houston, Arizona, Oklahoma State, and New Mexico again next season; same as we had this season except that the venues are reversed. But here's what we have lined up already for the next few years after that...

http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa/conf-usa...unners.php

As you can see, our AD and Coach have been VERY aggressive in finding quality opponents for our program. It's a positive in the sense that playing some of those teams may help sway a recruit or two our way, and also helps our kids improve at a faster rate than if we were just playing lightweights. But it can also be a detriment in terms of what it does to our overall record and possible bowl eligibility, as well as the added likelihood of our boys being banged up by the time conference play starts. I think that another thing which plays into the minds of our AD and coach is that scheduling nationally recognized schools in turn gives our young program more national exposure.

I believe in the end that there are positives and negatives from both philosophies of scheduling, and that people will do what they feel will most benefit their kids.

RE: Herd Adds 1AA Rhode Island to 2014 OOC Schedule
I honestly don't mind I-AA games. Having been a I-AA program ourselves, I think it's important for us to continue to play regional I-AA teams in order to get wins, but also to help those programs get exposure and growth. However, I would much rather see us playing an FCS Top 10 team like Coastal Carolina or Towson, or renew some old rivalries from the SoCon days or even just play regionals like Morehead State, EKU, Liberty, etc. over a team I didn't even know played football.

if Marshall gets an easy draw from the West they might run the table.

Too many MAC teams. I don't like seeing 3 OOC games come from the same conference. Just an opinion.

If Marshall were to play between Miami and Ohio it would be vs FAU. I sure hope one of our byes isn't the 2nd week of the season.

RE: Herd Adds 1AA Rhode Island to 2014 OOC Schedule
Miami was good when we added them to the schedule under Haywood.

So the plan was:

Good nBCS (Miami)
Average nBCS (Ohio)
BCS team (Louisville)
bad nBCS (Akron)

now its

Bad nBCS (Miami)
Bad nBCS (Akron)
Average nBCS (Ohio)
FCS (URI)

RE: Herd Adds 1AA Rhode Island to 2014 OOC Schedule
i think going forward for CUSA teams the formula shoul dbe if you can command this type of schedule...

P5 School (home/away) Top 15
P5 school (home/away) Top 30
G5 School (home/away) Top 40
G5 School (home/away) top 40

I say this because if you want to have the chance of running the table and trying to get into one of the slots (MAC/CUSA/MWC/AAC/Sun Belt) then this has to be the formula for CUSA. I believe every conference will be different becausse of the teams the play within the conference.

In the case with Marshall, if they had an OOC next year like this.. example
@ WVU
Virginia Tech
@ Fresno State
UL-Lafayette

Then run the table in CUSA... Marshall would be top 15 if not higher.

This is just IMO.
